Short sample - How do send?

I'm sending a snail mail query off to an agent who asks in the submission guidelines on her website (i.e. this is an initial query, the sample pages aren't personally requested) for the first five pages of the manuscript along with the initial query.

My question may seem like a minor one, but presentation counts, and I wanted to ask: Should I send this short sample in a large envelope to keep the pages flat, or should I fold them up into a standard #10 business envelope along with my query letter? On the one hand, I don't want it to look like I'm sending an unsolicited partial, since she doesn't ask for one with the initial query. On the other hand, I figured that folded pages might be bothersome to read.

Any of your suggestions are wholly appreciated.

A flat envelope isn't necessary. Six pages will fit fine into a #10 business envelope, even with an enclosed SASE (which you can EITHER use a #9 and send flat inside, or fold a second #10 into thirds and tuck it into the stamp side of the envelope--this makes it easier for the outer envelope to process through mail sorting machines.)

For future reference, if you get more than ten pages, then I would suggest a flat envelope. For example, if you're sending a query, plus the five pages, plus a five page synopsis. The return envelope should either be another flat (if you want the pages back) or a #10 (if you don't.)

Good luck with the query! :)

Thanks! I just bought a huge box (only size they had) of #9 envelopes because I wasn't sure about that, either. I appreciate the advice.
