Looking for recs for high school class: needs to be contemp, girl protag, romance not main plot/no sappy gushy love of bad boys or 'I can't do anything without him' kinda thing - something deeper! And very important: preferably less than 300 pages long. Ideally around 250.

(Have very many good titles in mind, but they're all too long...)

I'm looking for examples of YA with lyrical prose. I'm not sure if that is exactly what I mean, but something that sings. I tend to write in rather matter of fact, to the point way, and I want to branch out a little with a little more description and a little beautiful sentence construction. I don't know if that makes any sense, but if you have suggestions for any YA, any genre, with beautiful prose I would love some ideas.

I don't know if you're still looking for lyrical YA ideas, but I think Jodi Lynn Anderson's TIGER LILY is really beautifully written. Jandy Nelson's books I'LL GIVE YOU THE SUN, and THE SKY IS EVERYWHERE, are both very lyrical, but super accessible.

Does anyone have recommendations of historical YA set in or around the 1920s? Preferably with no supernatural/paranormal, but I'll look at anything. :) Thanks!

Christa, I haven't read it, but I just came across a series called BRIGHT YOUNG THINGS that's set in the Roaring 20's, by Anna Godbersen. It has decent reviews.

Ellaroni, I'd suggest Emery Lord's OPEN ROAD SUMMER and THE START OF ME & YOU. Both focus more on friendship than high school. She reads a bit like Sarah Dessen-y books :D I love her stuff. START is out next week!!!

Christa - Another 1920's based book The Diviner's by Libba Bray and the sequel coming out soon. I think it has paranormal elements.

This was the first thing I thought of, actually, but I didn't suggest it because it does focus on paranormal elements.

Off the top of my head:

The Winner's Curse
Half Bad
The Young Elites
The Girl at Midnight

You can also search Goodreads for lists of books that debuted in a certain year:

You might have more luck if you start a new thread in the section to get more people's attention.

I'm still looking for contemporary YA books with unreliable protagonists, awesome twists and reader manipulation.

An Ember in the Ashes

As of right now, An Ember in the Ashes is only a stand alone. There is hope that more will be written, and if you read the book, you know that there is no way it can just end there, but alas, for now, there is no deal for any subsequent books.

Some more obscure ones:
SOPHIE by Guy Burt (not 100% this is YA? It was shelved as that when I bought it though. It's the creepiest and most haunting book I've ever read). Less so: his (AFTER) THE HOLE.
BECOMING BINDY MACKENZIE by Jaclyn Moriarty (this is lighter than I suspect you mean but stick with it if you haven't read it! The ending blew my mind even though Bindy is more like ignorant-unreliable than maliciously unreliable.)
SPECIAL TOPICS IN CALAMITY PHYSICS by Marisha Pessl (this is one of those books that slogs on and on and on...until the amazing ending which somehow justifies like 450 pages of waffle. It's certainly one of the oddest and most unforgettable novels I've ever read.)

If you're still looking for unreliable narrators:

BONE GAP by Laura Ruby
and my favorite, one of my faves of YA, ever, is INEXCUSABLE by Chris Lynch.

Yes, these were going to be my two recs, too. I love Chris Lynch's work.
