In case anyone is interested in adding some flair to their NaNoWriMo author profile page, I’ve discovered that you can add images and special HTML characters with a little effort.

To add an image just insert a standard HTML <img> tag pointed to a remote image available somewhere on the web. I used single quotes because double quotes are often stripped for security. The Bio section is 595px wide. Try to keep your image width smaller than that or it will overlap the sidebar.

You can also insert special characters by inserting HTML entity codes. For example, entering &block; will insert a thick block that is useful for focusing attention on a line.

Be sure to do the Save then Edit sequence twice after making your changes to force a database refresh. On the first save you will just see the raw HTML, giving the false impression it failed. This works, at least at the time I wrote this, because they’re displaying the profiles with a script called CKEDITOR which does a special HTML rewrite on every page load which allows these two types of tags.

Try not to abuse this so they won’t ban it. I do not believe this violates their TOS, but if it turns out it later does, then please accept my apologies.

YMMV. This is what worked for me on my profile:

Good luck with your novel.

Nice, I like the pictures you picked for your bio.
