I think the word, "alter," is a cuss word in canine circles. It must be a cuss word 'cause I've never heard Lavern use it.
With regards to the 'second child' debate, I can only add this:
I have three daughters. I should have stopped after the first one. Not that the other two haven't turn out well, they have. Surprisingly so. But... put it this way... I understand why some animals eat their young.

I wince every time I hear one of those words used for the other and, believe me, given some of the folk around here, I wince a lot.
Of course, I also hear "cadillac converter" for "catalytic converter" often.
