I've been working on several pieces of flash fiction this last month. It's always such a challenge to cram as much story as possible into such a small word count.

Something I have been contemplating lately is how to tell when a story idea of yours should be a flash fiction piece should be lengthened into a short story. I know that the first clue is that you can't fit all the story into less than 600 words, but what are some other indicators that you should try conveying your story in a different length.

Ideas are what you make out of them. I believe any story can be told at any length. It's all in how you structure the story, where you start the story, and what you put in and leave out.

Ideas, just like stories themselves, can be lengthened or shortened to what ever degree you wish.

The real question is whether the idea is one that appeals to you, that you think is one you'd like to write as flash fiction, as a short story, or as a novel.
