AW. A very nice place!
... it used to be in the middle of the screen.
It still is but when you begin typing in the box
the cursor relocates to the address bar at the top.
Attempts to fix the calamitous situation have met with miserable failure.

It ain't just me. Same thing at work.
In desperation, I turn to you for suggestions,
before investing in an electron microscope.

Danka Chein in advance !

Looks like the bar at the top, what Chrome calls the "omnibox", is the default blank for searches.

See this link for a bit of info. I'm still looking for a means to change that.

... thanks. Good to know the name for it at least.
I tried searching online for a solution too. No luck.
ps This new feature looks pretty wild:

Search and browse the web faster by trying the Instant feature for the address bar. With Instant enabled, search results and webpages appear as you type in the address bar, even before you press Enter. If you don't see the results you want, just keep typing and the results dynamically update.

I think that's an older version of Chrome. Here's something I found:

https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/95656?hl=en

Not sure if that link will get you all the way to the answer. Here's the steps on that page:
The prediction service is typically turned on by default. Follow the steps below to turn it off.

  1. Click the Chrome menu
    SNP_2696434_en_v1
    on the browser toolbar.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Click Show advanced settings.
  4. In the "Privacy" section, deselect the "Use a prediction service to help complete searches and URLs typed in the address bar" checkbox.

I think that's it.

... well, it was worth a try.
Thnx :)
I may try uninstalling Chrome and reinstalling it.
Maybe that'll work by some chance.
(My favorite browser too. Otherwise I wouldn't bother.)

You realise this "feature" is so Google gets to see all your searches... so they know what to charge advertisers. The more people they can document searching for something, the higher the rates.

It's the whole reason for Chrome's existence. It's also why they give millions of dollars to the Mozilla Foundation to be Firefox's default browser.

As someone once put it, whenever a for-profit entity provides a valuable service for free -- you're not the customer, you're the product.

I loathe Chrome as a browser regardless, they couldn't pay me to use it. Well, millions of dollars, maybe.
