I may be the only person to have come across this but I just pried my forehead out of this brick wall and figured I should share my pain so others could avoid the same. Here goes!
If you're using Open Office to write then please take a minute to make sure this little check box called "Always create backup copy" is clicked. It's buried beneath a tree of preferences but it's worth the ten seconds of your time...trust me.
For some reason I was under the impression that the Auto Recovery feature would protect me should my computer take an unscheduled nap but I was oh so wrong.
Check this page for instructions on where to find that option.
