Is it bad I like to read this thread for a good laugh?
You're not alone.

I vote sac because it leaves no room for misinterpretation.

I actually think (in my part of the world) that sack would be the more common spelling, and sac might pull readers out of the story more due to that fact, but sack could be misread as something else and sac would not.

By the way, "straighten his sack and act like a grownup" is a great line. Because apparently I am not a grownup despite evidence to the contrary. *giggles like a seven-year-old boy* :D

I feel so childish right now. XD

I showed this thread to my husband. I told him, "In your work, you have sober discussions about important things. This is what I do all day."

We love it. Thank you people for being willing to help and amuse.

a character says another character should "straighten his sack and act like a grownup".

I never heard of that saying and don't really understand it.

I never heard it before either, but I pictured it as a male version of "Don't get your panties in a bunch."

It can be translated thus: Adjust your testicles, because you are old enough that they have descended and you should act as if that is the case.

+1 vote for "sack". In the context, I don't see how misinterpretation is possible, and sac is a little too proper to feel right in slang, especially since most who would use it in such context probably sooner recognise the more common spelling. I mean, if they read....

It's 'sack'. It's not like 'cum', where the meanings are different ('cum' is one thing; 'come' is another). A sack is a sack is a sack. It is a ball sack. Sac is an abbreviation for the capitol of California.

I live in Sactown, so this whole thread made me snort coffee on the keyboard.

Sac tends to be used in a more biological sense, so an anatomy textbook might refer to the scrotal sac. But I'm guessing that typical colloquial usage is "ballsack."

But yes, there are so many other wonderful words out there for the thing.

Beer made with testicles?

I'm going to have the weirdest dream.

when I was a student I failed a module because, during the practical exam, (which was a castration) I threw the freshly removed testicles at my friend.

I completed the procedure perfectly, but apparently I showed a lack of professional decorum.

This is literally the best anecdote.

I think it predates "Man up!" Before "Man up!" caught on, you might have heard "sack up," "show some sack," or "show some sand," the latter being favored in westerns.

I think this may be the first scrotum thread I've seen here.

I wasn't aiming for an etymology. Just a similar phrase.

Ah, that makes sense.
