Chicken Soup for the Soul: What I Learned From the Cat
101 Stories about Life, Love, and Lessons

Cats have always been wonderful companions and playmates that brighten and enrich our lives but they are also amazing teachers. We want cat lovers, both lifelong and reluctant, to share the lessons they have learned about life from their furry companions. The stories in this book will delight readers with the often humorous, heartwarming, poignant and always inspiring lessons taught to us by our feline friends and family members.

We are looking for true stories and poems written in the first person of no more than 1,200 words. Stories can be serious or humorous, or both. Remember, these stories should be about lessons learned from your cat rather than general stories about your cat.

Here are some suggested topics, but we know you can think of many more:

Learning to heal
Learning to forgive
Learning to know who is really in charge
Learning how to not take yourself so seriously
Learning to put things in perspective
Learning about unconditional love
Learning to overcome adversity
Learning about loyalty
Learning to be kinder
Learning to say goodbye
Learning about family
Learning to have courage
Learning about humor
Learning that beauty is in the eye of the beholder
... Anything else you think is interesting and inspirational about our feline teachers

If your story is chosen, you will be a published author and your bio will be printed in the book if you so choose. You will also receive a check for $200 and 10 free copies of your book, worth more than $100. You will retain the copyright for your story.

SUBMISSIONS GO TO http://chickensoupforthesoul.com/form.asp?cid=submit_story.

The deadline for submissions is March 31, for publication in September 2009.

Something to Talk About
Each Cup of Comfort anthology includes a short bio of each author who has contributed a story to that book. If you've read these mini-vitas, you have no doubt noticed that some of our contributors have published books of their own.

As the editor of thirty-plus Cup of Comfort books, I'm always pleased and proud to learn that one of our contributing authors has published a book of her or his own. In fact, I've bought several of them for myself and for family and friends.

One of the things I love about the Cup of Comfort community is that we are genuinely interested in and supportive of one another. So I thought it would be great to provide a way for Cup of Comfort authors to tell us about their books. To that end, I started a new thread in the Cuppa Clatche forum, called Toot Your Literary Horn. I invite you to stop in for a visit and to add your books and check out the books of your fellow Cup of Comforters.

Remember: To post to the forums, you must be registered for the site and logged on.

A Cup of Comfort® for Fathers

The connection between father and child can be as deep as the ocean, as strong as a mountain, and as uplifting as fresh air. For all its rewards, though, fatherhood is not without its challenges. And for all the gifts dads bring to their kids' lives, dads sometimes falter and fumble. Yet, the father-child bond forms, holds, and grows. A Cup of Comfort for Fathers will feature inspiring and insight true stories about the life-defining and life-enriching relationships and experiences shared by fathers and their children. These personal essays will be of varying topics and tones (heartwarming, humorous, poignant, provocative, etc.); about fathers and children of all ages and varying circumstances; and written by fathers, daughters, and sons. Story length: 1000–2000 words.

Submission Deadline: April 1, 2009 Submit Your Story Now
Finalist Notification: April 15, 2009

A Cup of Comfort® for a Better World:
Stories that celebrate generosity, compassion, and volunteerism

To coin a phrase of President Barack Obama, Yes, we can! make a positive difference in the world. And this Cup of Comfort anthology will feature living examples of good Samaritans whose good deeds inspire others to do their part to make the world a better place or to just make life a little bit easier—for loved ones, neighbors, strangers, future generations, or any of God's creatures, great and small. Potential themes include (but are not limited to) charitable work, random acts of kindness, paying it forward, or lending a helping hand, a port in a storm, or a shoulder to lean on. Stories must be uplifting and personal, preferably narrative essays; we are not interested in journalistic articles or thinly disguised PR pieces for charitable organizations. Story length: 1000–2000 words.

Submission Deadline: June 15, 2009 Submit Your Story Now
Finalist Notification: July 1, 2009

A Cup of Comfort® for Couples:

Stories that celebrate what it means to be in love

It is said that love works in mysterious ways. And this anthology will reveal the many mysteries as well as the inner workings of true love. Of course, being a "happy couple" involves more than being in love, and making a romantic relationship work takes more than romance. So this book will feature uplifting true stories with a balanced mix of tones—romantic, poignant, humorous—and on a wide range of topics: From falling in love to the secrets of lasting love. From celebrating special moments between you to overcoming bumps in your relationship. From experiences that brought you closer together to experiences that threatened to tear you apart. From endearing rituals to challenging changes. From sparkling new love to glorious golden love. Or any other topic that speaks to the joys, the challenges, and/or the nature of a romantic partnership that works for you. Narrative essays preferred. Story Length: 1000–2000 words.

Submission Deadline: October 1, 2009 Submit Your Story Now
Finalist Notification: October 15, 2009

A Cup of Comfort® for Golfers:

Stories that celebrate the follies, the triumphs, and the joy of the game

This anthology will feature upbeat, insightful, inspiring, and humorous true stories about learning, playing, and enjoying the uniquely challenging and satisfying game of golf. The book will include stories about golfers of every age and of every persuasion—amateur, pro, casual, recreational, hard-core, newbie. Most of the stories will be written by golfers, but the book will likely include stories written by golf "widows" (or widowers) or other loved ones of "golf nuts." Stories must be about personal experiences. We are not interested in articles on how to play the game, profiles/bios of professional golfers, etc. Narrative essays preferred. Story Length: 1000–2000 words.

Call for submissions

Posted by: "Donna Wright"

For many years now, I have had a dream and recently was challenged to make that dream a reality. Therefore, I would like to introduce you to:
Always Keepers Press

Our mission is to produce and promote audio books of fine quality and in doing so serving the authors whose books we accept.

Our first release, BETWEEN A CLUTCH AND A HARDPLACE, by successful author GAYLE TRENT, will be released in October of this year.

777 PRODUCTIONS, which has been in the video-audio business for well over 20 years, will be producing our books.

SHERRY BIGLER-DONOVAN, an award winning voice talent in Knoxville, TN, is our first "reader."

After hearing the first chapter, Gayle was amazed at how Sherry had captured her characters and is excited about us also producing her second book in the series, WHEN GOOD BRAS GO BAD.

Now on to why you have received this email.

This is a call for submissions!

I am looking for 2 very different types of proposals.

1. I need short stories, of 5,000 words or less. These are freebie stories for our website. You will receive compensation, and if you wish, after the story has been on the site for one month, you can sign on to keep the story-for sale-on the site.

2. I am looking for cozy mysteries and sweet or inspirational romances. If you can´t read it aloud in church, I´m not interested. Sweet refers only to the language and sexual content. Other than that it can be a comedy or drama or anything in between. Word count is not an issue. And, we love romantic suspense.

So there you have it. If you wish to submit, please follow the guidelines below:

1. As a new venture and small press, we are looking for marketeers! Authors who know how to work the Internet to their best advantage are always going to catch my eye.
In the subject line, please put: PRE-SUBMISSION/ BOOK TITLE.
Please send me your name and the title of your book along with no more than a one-page synopsis of the story in the body of an email. Also, a list of your email/internet sites, such as Myspace/Homepage, etc.

2. After reviewing the above information, I will send you an email with further procedures.

Hope to hear from you soon!

Send the above to:
AlwaysKeepersPress@ yahoo.com

And, join us in October for our first release!

We will be up and running on ALWAYSKEEPERSPRESS. COM.

Please feel free to repost to loops, blogs, websites, etc. Help us make this project a huge success!

Open Submissions Call!

All RomanceTM Needs You for the 28 Days of Heart Campaign to Benefit the American Heart Association

During the month of love, when everyone's attention is focused on matters of the heart, we at All Romance (www.allromance. com) want to help fight the number one killer of women, heart disease, and we need your help and your submissions.

Beginning February 1, 2010, we will release one new short story per day for the entire month. From: Incredible Prayers, A James S. Bell Project
To: A James S. Bell Project Incredible Prayers
Sent: Thursday, July 16, 2009 3:12 AM
Subject: Seeking Manuscripts

Dear Valued Writer,

We are now in phase two of the Incredible Power of Prayer series and I welcome you to join us. Guideposts is launching a series of 12 books on various aspects of prayer and how people from every walk of life have been transformed through God’s response to their prayers. These books will be available by mail only, sent monthly as part of a book series promotion.
You may have contributed to the first three titles in this series (Praying from the Heart, The Healing Touch, and Expecting Miracles) or perhaps to my Cup of Comfort, Life Savors, or Love Is a Verb brands. Or perhaps I’m contacting you for the first time. Whatever the case, I eagerly seek your participation in this next phase of prayer volumes.

Book four, From Tragedy to Triumph, deals with the pervasive issues related to our trials, hardships, and suffering in life, whether physical, emotional, relational, financial, etc. The focus should not be so much on the trials or the stress they cause, but on how the power of prayer eliminated or helped you deal with these trials. What lessons did prayer teach you through these ordeals and how did God use them for good for your life or others?
Book five, Refreshed by the Spirit, focuses on prayers we send to God when we are spiritually dry; when situations might be okay but we don’t feel His presence; or during a dark night of the soul when life is difficult. The fault may be our own because we’re not walking with the Lord, or He may seem distant because of struggles in our lives. As we continually pray for His presence, suddenly things change and we are refreshed and filled with his reassurance, peace, and joy. How did God visit you in a new way that caused praise and thanksgiving and may have even changed your life?
Book six, Love and Forgiveness, deals with relationships that have been strained or broken due to offenses against us, or our own faults. When we pray for love for those who mistreat us and pray for the willingness to seek restitution and restoration we regain our families and friends and change the hearts of our enemies. How was prayer the determining factor in a renewed love, forgiveness, and eventual restoration of relationships?

We would be pleased to consider as many stories for these three volumes as you wish to submit. We’ll look at stories of up to 2,000 words and prefer that they be at least 1,000 words. The stories should have a creative title, an attention-grabbing introduction, main body with a conflict or challenge, and a clear, satisfying resolution. They need to be descriptive, rooted in time and place, compelling personal experience stories with a realistic portrayal of the people involved. They need to be stories rather than testimonies, Christian living articles, and shouldn’t focus on mere feelings or mental states.
Most important, they need to revolve around prayer itself and not the circumstances of the story. These are themed books but the purpose is to convince the reader of the power of prayer in these situations.

We prefer original stories but you may also submit previously published stories that you have full rights for and are not currently in print with a major publisher. We pay $25 fo stories under 1200 words, and $50 for stories over 1200 words. You may retain the right to publish the stories in magazines and in books with less than national distribution and not carried in nationwide bookstores.

We are accepting manuscripts for all three volumes until December 15, but the sooner you submit the better your chance of acceptance. We will notify you by February and send you a permission form if your story is a finalist for any of these volumes.
Please send your manuscript attached to the e-mail rather than pasting text in the email
Window. Feel free to send your manuscript in normal manuscript formatting, with your full contact information—name, address, phone number, email address—and whether you’re offering First Rights or Reprint Rights at the top of each manuscript. Please include a biography of 30 words or less at the end of each manuscript.

Please direct all inquiries and manuscript submissions to my colleague, Jeanette Littleton, at [email protected].
If this email has been forwarded to you and you can’t submit to this call, but would like to hear about other editorial needs as they arise, please send us your email address and we’ll add you to our notification list. Also please pass this along to any writing or praying friends who might be interested.
Blessing to you and yours,
Jim

This call is not for a Christian publication, but was made by a friend of mine and I thought someone here might be interested.

We need cheeky writers who don't necessarily know about photography but who have such an amazing writing style that readers are entertained. We need people who can perform an interview, transcribe and turn out about 3000 words of decent writing in maybe 4-6 weeks.

We are a largely visual magazine, but we want the writing to match the very forward style, so I liken it to Rolling Stone meets an art magazine meets Rangefinder.

If anyone is interested, they can contact me with a writing sample showing their personality at [email protected]. We pay $300 for an article for our magazine's beginners and publish online, and pay increases with our experience with writers.

The Christmas Spirit is the sequel to the wildly successful "Christmas Miracles" book. This new project is a book that we have contracted with St. Martin’s Press for the fall of 2011. However, the completed manuscript is due in the spring of 2010. Bestselling author, Debbie Macomber, has agreed to write the foreword. We seek true stories that emphasize the significance of the Christmas season. So often, we get caught up in the busy-ness of the season—the shopping, the family drama, and the event planning—that we lose sight of the true meaning of Christmas. Sometimes, through God's grace or what some call a twist of fate, we're able to step back and grasp the real meaning of Christmas and our lives are enriched. These are the kind of stories we are seeking.

Please know, if we select your story, we will edit it to ensure that the book flows with a single, unified voice. We’ll change only the writing voice or style and not the factual information of the story. If you are unwilling to allow us to edit your story, please DO NOT submit.
This is an excellent opportunity to see your writing in a book with other outstanding authors.
You must follow these guidelines:
  • Deadline for stories is February 1, 2010.
  • All entries must be double-spaced, 12-point font, Times New Roman, Word document.
  • Stories may run from 900 to 1,300 words. We will not consider longer pieces.
  • We prefer first-person narratives.
  • Your name will be listed with your story and you'll have a fifty-word information/resume paragraph at the end of the book.
  • Every story must have a positive solution that results from events or timing at the Christmas season.
  • Every story must have a positive application. That is, you must tell us what you learned about Christmas or how it changed your life.
  • You may send an original or a reprint. (If a reprint, please tell us where it was published and assure us that you own the reprint rights.)
  • If we accept your story, you will retain rights. You'll receive a $50 honorarium and at least one free copy of the book when it is released in October 2011.
  • We'll notify you of the results of your submission by March 31, 2010.
We will offer special discounts for contributors who wish to buy additional books. (We will send that information later.)

If you accept these terms, please fill out the form, attach the document, and submit it for review.
Thank You,

Cecil Murphey & Marley Gibson

2010 Christian Writing Contest Promotes Evangelizing through Story

Athanatos Christian Ministry's 2010 Christian writing contest is taking applications through February 15th. This is the second of their annual contest and with the addition of a poetry category is set to disburse more than $2,000 in awards, plus publishing the winners in an anthology. Every entrant receives a copy of the anthology for the price of their entry as part of ACM's effort to spur writers on to excellence.

The website for entering and more information is www.christianwritingcontest.com.

Athanatos Christian Ministry is an apologetics organization with a unique emphasis. Rather than only defending the faith through conventional arguments about philosophy, theology, and evidence, ACM understands the role of 'soft' apologetics in touching the human heart.

"Many intellectual objections at bottom are emotional objections," Executive Director Anthony Horvath explains, "but that isn't to say that just because they are emotional they are meritless. For example, Christians are the first to feel sick to their stomachs about the idea that so many people will perish eternally. Like Job, it is easy to say that it is better to have never been born. There are intellectual responses to this but those of us who are parents have already confronted such realities: we have children, knowing for certain that grief and suffering awaits either us or our children on account of the reality of death. We do not conclude there is no point in having children. We see instead that the joy of having them outweighs someone's inevitable sorrow. So, in apologetics we can tap into these experiences that most of us have gone through to help overcome our intellectual objections."

To that end, ACM pursues other avenues to defend the Gospel, like for example through the arts, and literature in particular.

"It is a simple reality that we resonate with a good story and that we are willing to consider new ideas in the course of receiving that story. A Christian author doesn't even have to explicitly present the Gospel in order to advance aspects of the Christian world view or tackle objections," Horvath says.

ACM's 2010 Christian writing contest is accepting entries through February 15th and will announce this year's winners in April. There is a category for high school students, another for those 19 and up, and a newly added one for poetry.

GUIDEPOSTS INCREDIBLE PRAYER SERIES

We are working on the next volumes of the Guideposts series Extraordinary Answers to Prayer (formerly Incredible Power of Prayer) series and I welcome you to join us. Guideposts has launched a series of 12 compilation books on various aspects of prayer and how people from every walk of life have been transformed through God’s response to their prayers. These books will be available by mail only, sent monthly as part of a book series promotion.

You may have contributed to the first four titles in this series (Praying from the Heart, The Healing Touch, Expecting Miracles, and From Tragedy to Triumph) or perhaps to my Cup of Comfort, Life Savors, or Love Is a Verb brands. Or perhaps I’m contacting you for the first time. Whatever the case, I eagerly seek your participation in this next phase of prayer volumes.

Right now we need stories for book five, Refreshed by the Spirit. This topic focuses on prayers we send to God when we are spiritually dry; and we just don’t feel His presence; or during a dark night of the soul when life is difficult. The fault may be your own because you’re not walking with the Lord, or He may seem distant because of struggles in your life.

This has led to telltale signs of spiritual dryness: fear, doubt, depression, bitterness, and so on. The circumstances behind these feelings are widespread: finances, marriage or parenting issues, illness, spiritual attack, loneliness, job issues, or maybe your own lack of moving on to maturity by neglecting church, prayer, or scripture reading. As you continually pray for His presence and change your behaviors and attitudes, suddenly things change and you are refreshed and filled with his reassurance, peace, and joy.

How did God visit you in a new way that caused praise and thanksgiving and may have even changed your life? Perhaps a very concrete answer to prayer in times of need led to this refreshment, or maybe it was a Scripture verse, advice from a friend, or spiritual sign from God, or maybe just an overwhelming sense of his love that picks you up and encourages to grow deeper with Him.

We’re pleased to consider as many stories for these three volumes as you wish to submit.

We pay $25 for stories under 1200 words, and $50 for stories over 1200 words. You may retain the right to publish the stories in magazines and in books with less than national distribution and not carried in nationwide bookstores.

We are accepting manuscripts for Refreshed by the Spirit until February 10 and Love and Forgiveness until March 1, but the sooner you submit the better your chance of acceptance. We will send you a permission form by April if your story is a finalist for any of these volumes.

Please send your manuscript attached to the e-mail rather than pasting text in the email
Window. Feel free to send your manuscript in normal manuscript formatting, with your full contact information on the manuscript—name, address, phone number, email address—and whether you’re offering First Rights or Reprint Rights at the top of each manuscript.

Jim

I thought this was interesting-- White Rose Pub starting a gothic line--

Submission Guide: Christian Gothic Romance
Announcing a new subgenre in to White Rose Publishing: Christian Gothic Romance™

What is Christian Gothic Romance™?

These stories resemble the genre of such authors as Victoria Holt, Barbara Michaels, Mary Stewart, Isabelle Holland and Phyllis A. Whitney, but with mainstream Christian theology intact. Stories can be contemporary or historical. There must be a supernatural element, there must be a Christian theme, and there must be a happily-ever-after ending. (See our standard guidelines for general information and story length requirements.)

These are romances surrounded by an atmosphere of mystique in which some or all of the aspects are:

· A brooding hero with a tragic past

· A heroine completely out of her comfort zone and in peril (whether real or imagined)

· A villain who is not as he appears

· A lonely mansion, eerie castle or other formidable setting

· A limited number of secretive secondary characters who may or may not help or endanger the heroine/hero

· A "mad woman in the attic" or similar secondary character who threatens the happy outcome of the story and is attached to a mystery to be solved. (Mystery must be 50% of the story, romance the other 50%.)

· An ancient prophecy

· Omens or portents of things to come (ultimately orchestrated by God for the good of the protagonists.)

· A supernatural element

o The supernatural aspect can encompass:

§ Angel Intervention within the confines of mainstream Christian teachings

§ Demonic activity within the confines of mainstream Christian teachings

§ The gifts of the Spirit according to 1 Corinthians 12:1-14 (Wisdom, Knowledge, Discerning of spirits (human, angelic, demonic), Speaking in tongues, Interpretation of tongues, Prophecy, Faith, Working of miracles, Healing)

§ Apparitions or visions sent by God with an important message

If you’re familiar with the traditional gothic romances “of old,” you’ll remember the tortured, yet completely loveable, hero. He has a tragic past that often includes one or more of the elements listed below

Chicken Soup for the Soul - CURRENT NEEDS

We’re Looking for Stories!
We have many Chicken Soup for the Soul® books in development and are adding new titles all of the time. We are always looking for new stories and poems and hope you have some for us to consider. Take a look at the list of our future book topics to see if you have a story or poem on a subject we are looking for and then please submit it to us.
If you have a great story or poem you want to submit but we are not collecting for that topic at this time, please save it and check back with us soon. Our list of Possible Books Topics is added to frequently and hopefully, in the near future, we will add a topic that will be a perfect fit for your story or poem.
We prefer that you submit your stories only once, but if you believe your story fits in more than one book topic, please indicate which other topics you have submitted it for in the Comments line on the submission form. You can submit your story by going to the link at the bottom of the page. Thanks!
Here Are Our Future Topics:

***SELECT YOUR TITLE***

Extra Christmas Stories
For a possible second Christmas book, we are looking for additional Christmas stories. We have already completed our Christmas Magic book, so if you submitted a story for that book, please do not resubmit as your story is already under consideration. New stories on all aspects of Christmas are welcomed. Please make sure that your stories are "Santa Safe" as we do not want to spoil the magic for anyone. The deadline date for story submissions is July 13, 2010.
Grandmothers
Everyone has a great story about the unconditional love between grandmothers and their grandchildren. We are looking for wonderful stories celebrating grandmothers and grandchildren, written by grandmothers about being a grandmother, and by grandchildren about their grandmothers. Stories about stepgrandmothers and honorary grandmothers are welcomed also. We are not looking for stories from children so please save those for a future book. The deadline date for story submissions is August 31, 2010.
Mothers and Daughters
Mothers and daughters… they are, at the same time, very similar and also completely unique. Mothers show daughters who they will become. Daughters live out mothers’ dreams. Through birth, childhood, teen years, adulthood, grandchildren, aging, and every step in between, this relationship can be the best, the hardest, and the sweetest. The deadline date for story submissions is December 31, 2010. This title will not publish until 2012.
New Moms
Becoming a new mom is the most amazing experience, unique and unlike any other. From the moment that baby is placed in your arms, there is an incredible feeling only a new mother can know. This book celebrates the physical, emotional, and spiritual experience of having a child and creating a family. We are looking for heartwarming, insightful, and humorous stories about raising babies and toddlers that share with our readers the wonders of early motherhood. We are also looking for stories about pregnancy and infertility issues. The deadline for story submissions is July 31, 2010.
Preteens
The preteen years – those years from nine to twelve can be rough from both a physical and emotional perspective. You are not a kid anymore but you are not yet a teen. There are so many issues to deal with and sometimes it feels like you are all alone. You are not! The stories in this book – almost all of them written by preteens just like you – will prove that to you. We are looking for stories that will inspire you, make you laugh, make you think and let you know that life is not as bad as it might seem. The deadline date for story submissions is August 31, 2010.
Teens
A completely new book on one of our most requested topics – TEENS. The stories in this book, written almost entirely by teens, will be stories that you will want to read again and again. They will serve as your guide on topics such as the daily pressures of life, love, school, friendships, parents and much more. We are looking for stories that will encourage you, inspire you, make you laugh, make you cry and show you that, as tough as things can get, you are not alone. The deadline date for story submissions is December 31, 2010. Young at Heart
So, you’ve crossed that magic age and you are ready to retire or start a second career. But you’re not ready to stop living! You feel energetic and young and there is still so much to see and do and enjoy. We are looking for stories that will share with our readers humorous and fun adventures from those who are actively enjoying their "senior years!" Tell us about your new careers, your volunteer work, your sports and sports cars, your new love interest, your travels, your families and all of those things you always wanted to do that you are finally doing now that you have the time. The deadline date for story submissions is December 31, 2010.
Thank you!

White Rose is a small press but not a vanity/subsidy pub! You don't pay a penny, they pay you! The money should always flow to the writer, not from. Good luck!
