Last week’s arrest of Jesse L. Matthew Jr., on charges of abducting Hannah Graham, “provided a significant break in this case with a new forensic link” to the Harrington case, state police spokeswoman Corinne Geller said in a news release Monday.
DNA evidence was found at the site of the Morgan Harrington murder. And in a subsequent rape case where the perpetrator was scared off and victim survived provided DNA evidence which matched DNA from the Morgan Harrington hiring killer, indicating the two cases were related.

And there have been at least four missing women from that area that police have long believed are related as well.
In the weeks that followed, police distributed a wanted poster that included a facial sketch of the suspect, based on the victim's description of a bearded black male between 25 and 35, about 6 feet tall and wearing a black pullover sweater with a zipper and light-colored pants.
I saw the sketch on CNN next to the mug shot of the suspect in the Hannah Graham case, and the resemblance is striking.

Police of course are being cautious, saying it's too early to jump to any conclusions. But there is unfortunately little doubt that Hannah Grahm, who was last seen alive in the suspect's company, is dead. And zero doubt in my mind but that this guy is indeed a serial rapist/killer.

One of the most recent ones apprehended was Israel Keyes, who made the mistake of abducting a barista from an isolated coffee kiosk in February 2012 in Anchorage, Alaska. this event was caught on security video.

He compounded his blunder by stealing a credit card the next day from a woman's car, using it to fund travel to the lower 48, where he was arrested in Lubbock, Texas some days later.

While in custody, he confessed (with boasting) about having murdered a couple in Vermont, and alluded to several other murders. He was an itinerant construction contractor, and traveled extensively over the U.S. and Canada.

Investigators were able to connect him with about ten unsolved murders, as he played games with them, enjoying every moment of his notoriety (one of these interview sessions has been released to the public, and it's sickening).

As a finale, he said something like "Nobody will ever discover most of the bodies of my victims."

Then, in a moment of absolute brilliance on the part of Anchorage, Alaska correctional officers, he was allowed, in maximum segregation, to have a razor he should not have had, and used it to commit suicide, unnoticed, in his individual segregation cell. We will never know the true account of this monster's toll, thanks to the incompetence of his housers.

Correctional systems in this country are horrors of incompetence and corruption, among other things. The jail system in New York City is now under major scrutiny for all manner of abuses.

There was another rape (not alleged any more, imho), of a student at his college, so they knew his identity in that one. Unfortunately, he didn't get charged, like in the majority of such cases. But if they'd had his DNA in a database because of being under investigation for rape, then they would have had his identity for the later rape. He might have been in jail instead of out murdering two more young women :(

That's my opinion on the facts, obviously. The first rape is still 'alleged' legally, and Hannah's disappearance is still under investigation.

I really would like to see a DNA database that is more similar to the fingerprint database in that it includes folks under investigation for rape (or murder). It's incredibly frustrating to me the number of rape kits that have never even been run for anything. They are a wealth of information, clearly.

It makes me really angry to think that this dude raped someone and it wasn't properly investigated because it was on a college campus. He could have been stopped then, or at least taken off the streets for awhile.

A good friend of mine lives in Charlottesville. UVA, and its associated entities, is by far the largest employer in the county. According to her the recent revelations are just the tip of the iceberg in terms of criminal behaviour being swept under the rug.

As a side note, UVA did not accept any female students until 1969. That may not seem strange, unless you remember this is a *state* university.

That's what I'm being told. The prestige is entirely cosmetic and apparently, cosmetics is just good enough.

It's an important thing to examine, but remember for this predator that the first murdered girl they tied to him was outside of a rock concert.

The first two he raped were on different college campuses in Va, and the one he beat to a pulp and raped was in a residential area carrying her groceries.

This is about a man looking for the opportunity to attack anywhere it was dark or where he thought he could get the women alone. Unless we women are going to have male escorts to walk us to our doors without fail, he's kind of the worst nightmare scenario. He's a really, really big dude, too :(

There are things you can do to help ameliorate the chances of someone like that choosing to prey on you, and to escape if he does.

I am NOT, in any way, blaming the victims for not escaping or behaving in some way that 'caused' what happened. Their actions are of no consequence, to begin with, but it's also not even stuff that anyone could say would 'cause' an attack if they were into victim blaming.

Only saying because of the pup's male escort/he's a big guy post. He was, and walking in any kinds of pairs is a good safety thing in a solitary area.

However, the more confident and aware someone appears when walking - head up, shoulders back, good pace, alert, as if you're purposefully going someplace and aware of your surroundings, as opposed to strolling more slowly scrolling through your phone, or head down, hands in pockets, nervous, the less likely someone like this is to mess with you. It can still happen, but opportunistic predators don't want trouble. The more alert and, for lack of a better word, strong (not necessarily physically, just in that upright, walking confidently and purposefully way) someone looks, the more trouble they're likely to be to grab and drag off.

It can also help to play out scenarios, even just in your head. That's a lot of what self-defense classes do. It's not so much about learning lots of fighting techniques, but practicing a response. It's shocking to be grabbed or threatened, and people go still; that's normal. You can practice thinking about how you could make noise, kick, flail, punch, scream things that will cause a ruckus ('Rape!' and 'Fire!' tend to bring people). Stuff like that has caused attackers to just drop people they were trying to drag off and run, because it's trouble and will attract attention.

Nothing's guaranteed, but there are things that can help.

Also, just btw, never, ever, ever, under any circumstance, if you can at all avoid it, get in a vehicle or go with someone who is attempting to take you to a second location. Never. If someone grabs you, has a gun, and tells you to get in his car, run, kick, or tell him to shoot you right there. Do not ever get in the car; do anything to not go to a second location from where you are.

That was just his murder victim, right?

I don't know what you mean, exactly. He is DNA-tied to one earlier murder, now this murder, and a stranger-rape from years ago. They didn't have a suspect to compare DNA to until Hannah (this victim) went missing and he was a suspect in that.

He was also accused of rape by two different women at two different Va colleges years before all that.

That's just what we know, obviously. He is being looked at for much more.

ETA: Cornflake, I have been in more situations like than that I care to count :( They were mostly from when I was about 14-23 or so, and I got quite good at giving off a dont-fuck-with-me vibe when walking alone (including carrying an open knife with my keys!).

The most astounding one was in the middle of an all-night-diner, with my 6'3" boyfriend! Nobody got up to help, except my BF. Everyone in the place was in shock. Crazy stuff. But yeah, meek and submissive would have ended very badly; I have no doubt.
