Hi all - I took a screenwriting class ages ago, and then have been writing mostly prose so don't remember a lot of what I learned. Hoping you can help me out with a formatting question for a close-up of a newspaper. I've heard you generally shouldn't use camera direction in scripts, but I feel like this is important to the plot and needs to be shown..
Here's the scenario:
A man is walking through the kitchen and sets down a coffee mug on a table next to a newspaper. I then want to do a close-up of the newspaper to show the headlines.
Would it be something like...
INT. KITCHEN - DAY
Description of kitchen goes here.
John sets his coffee next to a faded newspaper.
CUT TO:
CLOSE UP of NEWSPAPER.
The newspaper shows a black and white photo of a smiling woman. The headline reads "Woman saves man from choking."
Then just switch to a new Scene Heading?
