There was a question in the Roundtable about motifs. I didn't comment there, but I will here. What's motif? It's what Leon Spinks wants for Christmas. It takes a true Old Fart to appreciate that one.

Hey, SF really is an old fart now. He has surpassed 10,000 posts. You really have to be old (or verbose) to do that.

Pretty much the same things they call you when you are paying attention. Just louder.

anyone else remember those little clips that they used to have in church pews so men could park their sunday hats while the service was going on? how about pen nibs? party lines? the maps of the continents and countries that your teacher would draw on the board in colored chalk?--s6

I don't remember the church hat thing, but I remember pen nibs. That's what we learned how to write on. The ballpoint pen was still fairly new. And I remember friends talking about having party lines, where several families would share a phone line.

Remember exchanges?

you mean phone exchanges?

my second grade nun refused to let us use ball point pens. she thought they were a flash in the pan, so my entire class learned to write cursive with a pen and ink. i'll bet this is a skill i share with very few others. i can also play tiddlywinks and shoot marbles---s6

Nylons (not pantyhose), desks with holes for the inkwells. And cord switchboards to go along with those exchanges. I worked on one of those.

Our desks had holes for the inkwells but no one knew what they were for. By the time I was in school, nib pens had cartidges.

And my parents first cars were Ramblers. My first car was a Rambler, straight six with manual shifter on the column. Thing was built like a tank.

In 1957, my dad bought me a 1947 Desoto. It was in mint condition, but I wouldn't drive it because it was a 6 cyl, fluid drive. Had to have a V-8!

My mom was telling me that back either prior to or during the war, there was a coin called the "mill?" It was 1/10 of a penny. She said that's why gas pumps always had the 9/10ths on them.

But I've found that my mom doesn't always remember rightly.

My older brother bought a 1951 Studebaker - Champion, I think. The front looked like the back.
There was a strong resemblence.
