of shared values. Unlike the 'melting pot' of the early twentieth century, modern day America is an ever growing conglomeration of special interest ethnic and national groups.

Dude, we never lived in that country "of shared values" of which you speak, and much of great American poetry has come from ethnic voices.

indeed. or dissenting voices, or the voices of the disenfranchised, or the voice of the madman.

as long as the poet succeeds in drawing back the curtain to reveal some aspect of the shared universal experience of being human, melanin is a non-issue.

Impact? Why can't poetry just be fun?

All right. I'm goofing off while taking a break from editing. I'll have a bit of fun.

Simile and Metaphor
Will always be what
Was before:
Language based on evolution;
Pauses—waits in
Revolution.

1. does poetry matter anymore?

Yes, it's the softness that makes square letters round.

2. is anyone writing anything important or provocative anymore?

Yes. Every day blood is shed on the poeting field of battle. Blood flowers.

3. do prose writers even care about poetry?

Yes, for it is the softness that makes the square letters round.

4. does my ass look fat in these jeans?

Honey, if you have to ask that question...you already know the question. Selfie that ass and see fo yoself.

I'm holding out for a hero. They have more leverage in the fight against the universe's inertia. Plus, bubblegum.

I was going to say

my name is Ana Pest
and I'm a pro.
But that's not so
and I'm not a hero, not a ho.
Not the worst
and not the best
but don't you call me
poetess.

Why I was going to say that I have no idea; it's feet are all wrong.
and someone else has all the bubblegum.

I saved the cartoons.
They may be worth money.

I've been wondering about this too, after my friend (https://nicepoethere.wordpress.com/author/nicepoethere/) pointed it out. Other forms that hit you emotionally (horror, thriller, romance, song) do well, but not so for poetry. Maybe because it's too subjective. But even then, equally subjective art like music or painting do well commercially. I mean, people do get rich selling their music albums or paintings, but I'm yet to hear of someone who got rich from poetry...

I made a million dollars on poetry, but I can't stanza money. I believe it to be a mere allegory. An allusion, if you will. Or if you won't. Money is the very antithesis of poetry. I'd pen a ballad about my feelings on the subject, but I already know my cadence would be off. The canto would probably rock, though. Is there an unused metaphor of poets who make money? Probably not. As a metaphysical poet, though, if I were to use one, I would certainly use it by the meter. Tanka. Tank very much.

I'm new to this thread, but I've read most of the opinions and jokes here. I started my writing with poetry written for personal healing. When I told various friends that I was writing a book, they said "not poetry please." I told them it was a memoir but felt sad that all those years of writing out my blood and pain in poetry was deemed worthless to my friends. After some contemplation, I've decided that only certain people can appreciate poetry, the people who can read between lines

I consider myself a poet.
I started writing poetry at 16 and am a senior citizen.
I write, or have written, poems, stage plays, music lyrics, novels, short stories. And more.
And they are all poetry but just not imprisoned in the stereotype thinking that it's gotta rhyme.
I have been a photographer for many years and much of my photographic art is poetic, too.

In case you haven't figured it out yet, there are three places you can post poetry:

(1) here in the main forum (which is not password-protected and therefore not the place to put anything you're thinking of trying to publish elsewhere, but is fine if you have no intention of ever trying to publish and simply want to share. People might comment and they might not.)

(2) the critique forum (which is password-protected and the place to request comments on things you might want to publish. I also put stuff there if I'm not completely sure if I'm sold on it and want to see what people say.)

(3) chapbook (which is also password-protected and the place to put something you might want to publish and simply want to share).

My apologies if you knew all that; a lot of folks don't.
