I am starting to prepare my thesis for an MFA program. It's going to be a short story collection, but my stories are not linked. I have to put together a thesis proposal, and I'm not sure what to really say other than here's a bunch of stories I worked really hard on and feel are my best work. I imagine anyone who has published a short story collection has to go through the same thing. How do you pinpoint what your collection is as a whole? And how do you decide which stories to include so that is seems like a cohesive piece of work? Also, I am struggling with a title. That might be because I don't know what the sum of my thesis is going to be at this point. It seems like a lot of collections use a title from one of the stories to title the collection. But how do you decide which story title to choose? Is using a story title as the collection's title the best way to go? I would love to hear from anyone who has done a creative writing thesis or collection.
