How quickly is very quickly? My full has only been with her a few weeks but I was wanting to get a feel for a usual response time from her.

Hey Hopcus--She took a little over two weeks to read my first manuscript. That said, I haven't heard back from her on the 2nd ms yet, and it's been about a month.

I sent an equery to Sara on Friday night and got a really nice "not a good fit" rejection this morning. That may be her standard form letter, but hey, it's a good one! And it used my name and not "Dear Writer!"

i equeried on 2/12 and haven't heard back.

*sighs*

there is no predictability, it seems.
if i haven't heard when i get back from
abroad in march, i'll equery again.

I just mailed a query to her. From what I read, she covers literary fiction. But she may cover others as well.

David Dunton at Harvey Klinger

Does anyone have any experience with David Dunton?
He just requested my full and I'm curious to know how long her usually takes to respond.

She requested a full from me not too long ago, but ultimately rejected it. You can read the details in this post if you want.

Andrea Somberg sent me the nicest rejection ever. Ever. It was something on the order of "This isn't the kind of thing I represent, but it's absolutely the kind of thing I love to read. Do let me know when it comes out!" Sweet.

Compared to some rejections, that's rather nice. Good luck.

Yeah. I currently am sending her the first five pages of my manuscript. If I get her I'm sure she'll be wonderful.

So, I just got a pass from Andrea..(a very nice one) Am I allowed to query someone else in this agency now, or is that a collective "pass."??

Carry on and query other HK agents - they do individual not collective passes

David Dunton

Since a previous question about him hadn't been answered, I thought I'd ask again.

Has anyone had experience with Mr. Dunton? I asked for my full the day after I queried him (he had read the chapters I have on my website) and he sounded very positive and professional. It wasn't a form request for a partial, which was really nice to see, and he asked if anyone else had requested the manuscript so I told him who.

I tell you, it was darn near impossible to find any information on what he is interested in LOL His YA books were very different from each other, so I had put off on querying him. Then I figured what the heck and did it anyway LOL His email the next day made it the best Friday ever! haha

I've been crossing my fingers and my toes (and occasionally my eyes when I'm not driving or watching Buffy) awaiting a response. :D

Just FYI, I sent an e-mail query to Andrea. She passed on my project, but responded with a polite e-mail in less than 24 hours.

Me too. But what's that saying? If at first you don't succeed, try, try again, and again, and again, and again........

I sent Andrea a query on the 7th and she emailed back on the 15th asking for a partial. So far she's been wonderfully professional and polite. I'll post again when I get a response!

Sent David Dunton an e-query on May 16th. He got back to me today, May 20th, with a no but suggested I try an agent friend of his and included her name and e-mail address.

Just wanted to chime in that I had a positive experience with Sara Crowe. She requested my full very quickly and ultimately rejected it, but she was extremely timely and professional. Great agency.

Impressed with Andrea Somberg. She requested first 5 pages, then rejected it with very kind words and an apology. She said "the voice didn't resonate with me as much as I had hoped."

She also said she was extremely busy these days and could only take on projects that absolutely fit for her. Judging by the number of queries indicated just on this thread, I would say she is certainly that!

I don't know if this is copyright infringement, but I'm sure someone will tell me. Meanwhile, I thought it might be helpful to see this quote from her I found on someone's site:

"what I look for in the first five pages I receive.

Every manuscript I take on is distinctive in its own right, but all
of of them have one thing in common: an engaging narrative voice. By
this I mean a writing style that pulls me in and makes me feel like
I'm a part of the story and the characters' lives. Unfortunately,
this is very hard to explain (hence my delay in writing to you!) and
it's obviously even harder to accomplish. I think that authors,
being the wonderful lovers of language that they are, sometimes
forget that the primary purpose of writing is communication. Too
often I see manuscripts in which the prose is too self-conscious,
chock full of symbolism and SAT-type vocabulary. Tell your story,
tell it well, and your distinctive narrative voice should blossom
naturally. So, an engaging narrative voice is vital. I also like it
when I'm introduced to compelling characters, protagonists that are
sympathetic yet complex. Another thing I look for is high line
tension, best described as the ability to create enough of a question
in the reader's mind to keep them turning the pages. Cliches, bad
grammar, too many adjectives, and awkward prose are all turn-offs."

I was lucky enough to pitch to Andrea at a conference last weekend and observe her with other authors. What a wonderful person! She was kind to every single author that pitched and agreed to look at pages from several of them. When she hears about a project she really likes, she gets very excited. She also seemed to really know the business, and the other agents had good things to say about her.
