Do they strip PhDs from people whose theses turn out to be plagiarised?

I've actually been curious as to the actual pathology of plagiarism. Once you rule out people that do it because of just the right combination of laziness/desperation (a college grade at stake, or a need to publish to keep a job, usually) the people left have very little to gain from plagiarizing and often enough even after they get caught, they do it again. The recidivism is what suggests there's something more to the picture.

I think the psychology is something akin to 'gambling addict'.
