I've read a few 19th century gothic horror novels, such as Dracula, Carmilla and some short story writers I can't quite name. I like the atmosphere and setting of these kinds of stories but would like to see them written with a modern sense of pacing and permissiveness.

Any suggestions? Are any authors doing that?

Efreysson,

I just adore 18th and 19th century gothic novels. My favorite writers are Shelley, Lord Bryon, Keats, Bowen, and Le Fanu. However, gothic literature has really been in the background since the late 20th century. B.E Scully and Anne Rice are some of the modern gothic novelists that come to mind.

Bumping this thread.

I really want to know what people recomend besides Anne Rice as I'm already a fan of her earlier and middle works. Besides, need something to read once I get out of 18th & 19th century gothics land.

Artful by Peter David. Not sure if it's exactly what you are looking for. But, modern writing, 19th century gothic London. It's really Dickens Oliver Twist vs. vampires.
