Silence by subtraction
bears no comfort;

a stillness too still,
it lies to the ear
with the music
of memories
only I hear.

A man conditioned
to fear the worst
can summon
unspeakable terrors.

It's good to see you posting again.

Evocative piece. It conjures places I've spent too much time in.

This poem succeeds so well, for me, primarily in it's brevity. I think it is essential to the topic. The rhyme, likewise, is a wonderful echo for the "music only I hear". Choosing a rhyme with "ear" is subtle but very effective in being soft enough and phonetic enough to make your point for you. (did that make sense? It did to me.)

Mostly, it just feels so true and relatable that I wonder how I never read these words before because I already know it.

Yes, this is a very successful poem. Always great to read something by you.

This is powerful, William. The first stanza in particular will haunt me.
