This. Having one sale a month can be a success. Finishing a novel can be a success. I really do not believe we are competing with one another as much as we are defining what success is for our particular journey and then doing all we can to touch, and hold onto, that brass ring.
My goals may seem low compared to other people's, but they are mine and they are just as valid as anyone else's. I join in the celebration of all our successes!
So very true merrihiatt!
I recently (5 months ago) left the company where I was an accountant for 7+ years, and 15+ in the industry, to spend time at home with my young children while my wife returned to the workforce.
Reading was something that disappeared from my life, except for the tax laws, business news, financial reports, etc. Some family members had Kindles and I checked them out and bought one as it was quite handy and plenty of selection.
The rush of reading and writing has come back to me from hibernation during all those years in the business world. I have been drowning in story ideas and look forward to September, when both of my kids will be in school all day so that I can have some serious writing time. I am writing when I can, but also trying to read some current fiction. "Me" time isn't easy with 3 and 5 year olds.
My idea of success at the moment would be to finish something, be it a short or novel, and publish it with "rave" reviews. If I get to that point, then my carrot will move further, just as it does for everyone.
Most important is to not let the cart get in front of the horse.
