I had a self-published project in 2008-2009 (through Lightning Source). I read all sorts of amazing books on typography, page layout, book design, etc., before I tackled putting it together (with Scribus).
Unfortunately, I did it all through interlibrary loan, so I don't have a record of which books were most useful.
My sister is involved in a situation where she's doing a lot of brochures, advertisements, etc., on top of her real job. I'd love to send her some books that will help her "see" how layout, type, design works together, so that she's not just relying on instinct.
If you had to recommend one or two books on type/layout/page design, for someone who was new to book design or marketing, what would you put at the top of the list?
