Interesting article. With recent developments in the comic industry I would agree that the author hits the nail on the head. However, I think this is another example of people, media, social media, etc. making issues where none exist. Not saying that the issue itself doesn't exist, just that it wasn't part of the creative process when the artist was creating his cover.

I thought the cover was creepy but it did fit with The Killing Joke

That's not really the point though, is it? To be fair the artist did pull the cover when he saw the reaction. But you could argue that he should have checked first with the people who are in charge of the Batgirl story now rather than just refer back to a trope from 25 years ago.
