Just read this quote from Sutcliff (sums up my approach to HF):

Being an historical novelist I have felt free to ‘fill in the gaps’ (of history) ...& tidy up a little here & there.

Sometimes one must "fill in the gaps" because no one really knows, but we have an educated guess.

I have no problem with the statement, as long as when we "tidy up" we aren't making outrageous claims and it doesnt feel like the time period.

When dealing with ancient history, if we didn't fill in the gaps we'd have a pretty sketchy novel ;)

I'm fine with filling the gaps with plausible and knowledgeable events, but tidying up a bit here and there bothers me.

I'm not real sure what this means, but if we know how something happened, leave it alone.
