MRSA, or Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, is a serious health issue, the major "superbug" that has developed resistance to modern antibiotics.
This is a jaunty little article I don't know quite what to make of, but it is on the BBC News.
Dr Christina Lee, an Anglo-Saxon expert at the University of Nottingham, translated a ninth century recipe for an eye salve using specific species of garlic and onion and cow bile and had the university microbiology team recreate and test it.
The concoction was considerably more effective than expected, killing up to 90% of the MRSA. The researchers think it is the combination of ingredients, not any single ingredient that made the potion work.

The team's findings will be presented at the Annual Conference of the Society for General Microbiology, in Birmingham.
