I only just arrived in this forum, and already it's nag, nag, nag.

Just wondering if anyone's doing this. Nearly four weeks down the road, and four prizes on offer - only five entries, and the discussion is dead.

Perhaps people feel as intimidated as I did.

Perhaps. But why?
- it's free to enter
- entries are posted anonymously
- four prizes should be plenty of incentive
(I can't justify giving a prize to nearly every entry, though)
- four weeks to write
- choice of poems, one or all - all free verse
- explicitly not a technical exercise
- not even necessary to express an opinion

What could we possibly do to make it less intimidating?

i think you're going to probably need to embrace (hopefully) quality over quantity and wish for the best, rob.

this contest is a tall order for a group whose critique forum largely consists of boilerplate platitudes and highly subjective rewrites that reveal little else than how the critiquer would have written it...

...and even these are merely offered as the obligatory interactions required to post their own works.

there are, of course, notable exceptions, but they unfortunately don't set the tone for the forum as a whole.

so i'm not sure how many are up to the challenge.

Here I am, drunk, at 11 pm, after a wine tasting.

I entered. Finally, this afternoon. And I was terrified. I'm new to the forum. Were my observations worth sharing? I could have gone a thousand directions, and I chose one. Was it the right one? Is there a right one? I still don't know. I may finish fifth of five. I won't help anyone. It's simply me vs. them. What to to say? What's the risk? What do I lose? What do I win?

I get why people would be afraid to enter. I was also afraid. A lifetime of overcoming such challenges forced me to enter. Without that, the deadline would have come and gone, and I would have crawled into bed without a comment. How many were afraid to venture an opinion, lest it be deemed too trite?

Mr. In a Hat informed me it was a critiquing contest and not a poetry contest. I guess I didn't enter! If it's extended one day, I can critique tomorrow, but now I am asleepy (legitimate word).

NO EXCUSE!!! I did mine and I was half in the bag and squeezing between fear and joy!! No kidding!

Rob will be pissed and Other Bad Things will happen if you don't!!!

I have chosen a direction, and it was probably erroneous!
God save me, for I am drunk and not responsible!

Dammit, now I'm all kumbaya.

I'm making a point of not reading the entries yet, but my sneaky glances indicate that this is going to be a great collection, even if there aren't any more. (I know there will be, and I'm a little ashamed of my pity party, but stuff that, it worked.)

Also, I love that there are newcomers among the entrants. I hope they'll stick around.

If I submitted a critique, anyone can! We all love language here. Well get in and say some things about the language of the poem. And how did the poem effect you. Anyone can do that, and once done, you'll do it again, and again.

I know I will.

I'll stick around, though for reasons quite independent of any contest.

I've read and written poetry for a very long time, all on my own. I've lurked in this forum and others, and yet been silent. It's William's fault I've ventured outside of that (a few words of his struck more deeply than he probably imagined they would), but having done so, I don't think I'll retreat from it, at least not very soon.

I'll admit that I feel my entry was inadequate. There were so many profound things to say about the imagery and metaphors in the poems, yet I chose one observation. (All the time feeling that more than that was more than anyone likely wanted to hear. I had so much more to say --but was it too obvious? Did anyone care? Would the mermaid sing to me, or would the peach be all mealy and disgusting?)

Anyway, whatever happens with the contest, I've identified a few of you as kindred souls, and look forward to seeing more of you.

You know what's pathetic?

Tonight I went to an extraordinary wine tasting event. Tickets are $275 each, and worth every penny, if you love wine. I was lucky enough to have someone treat me to the evening.

And afterward, I came home, turned on my computer, posted on AW, and added another line to my poem in progress (and took out two lines, which is more difficult).

I am continually sidelined on my road to hedonism and debauchery by my urge to write travelogues. Can't someone help?

*props landscapes and portraits all over apartment*

:gaah: I'm fresh out of peasants to paint! And wine!

*opens bottle of lagavulin*
*scribbles limerick on cocktail napkin*
*passes out*

Ah, nouveau haiku.

Poetry games! :hooray: Hang on. Drunk or sober, I am up to this challenge. I think. Sort of.

lagavulin shots
limerick on a napkin
typical thursday

I come home and go online
posting things I may regret.
After drinking too much wine
I come home and go online
and soon it's too late to repine
whatever words I failed to vet.
I come home and go online
posting things I may regret.

Vino
in veritas
or so they like to say.
Frankly, I lie whether drunk or
sober.

Rhythm and rhyme are fun.

Doing something intelligent with them -- that's hard work. As we all know.
