In reality, the KJV is full of innocuous mistranslations and deliberate twists or changes in the text. Many times, this is done in order to make the union of the Old and New Testaments more cohesive. There are several instances where the text of the OT is changed to clearly reflect references to Jesus when you'd have to stretch the original text a lot to get there. It's quite interesting, actually.

I've read 8 of them. There's a handful beyond those 8 that I'd like to read, the rest, eh, not so much.

Then again, I'm not a "classics" person. I read what interests me, not what somebody tells me I should like.

But the others I've read multiple times, and Dante in English, multiple times, though I've only taught extracts.

Some of us do actually read the Bible in the original languages.

In some cases, we read it in ms.

It's not so much "better" in terms of accuracy in as much as the King James Bible, like Chaucer and Shakespeare, has had a profound effect on English idiom and prose style.

Some of the committee--like Lancelot Andrewes--were astonishing prose stylists.
