I think this is more or less what happened:

1. Both Hub and Hasbro agreed that Youtube videos of the show were no big deal.
2. MLP:FiM got an adult male fanbase.
3. Hasbro, being the large, sleepy corporation that it is, ignored them.
4. The Hub went, "YES! We have a hit show! Make promos for the fans! Focus on fan-favorite characters! Whee!"
5. Hasbro thought about it for a minute and said, "Well, make sure it still sells to little girls. Fewer monster plots, less danger, and more songs."
6. The Hub complied with season 2.
7. At some point, someone at Hasbro thought to check on the new fanbase and found both porn and grimdark material.
8. Hasbro management freaked the fuck out and launched 'Operation: Kill the Brony Fanbase'.
9. Direct assault on Youtube is casualty number one. Greater control over the show i nseason 3 will be casualty number two.

It's a shame. If Hasbro were smart, they'd launch an edgier spin-off show that appealed to the teenage market. They could make a mint licensing merchandise to sell to that group. There's some sign they intend to try that -- I've seen MLP:FiM school notebooks. But I don't think they'll allow their core franchise to be tainted. Well, it was fun while it lasted.

Not that it's over, really.

10. Starved for adult-oriented cute animal content, a thousand new non-pony settings and characters are created by artists everywhere. In a few years one of them is sure to turn into the next big fandom...
They underestimate us greatly if they think simply removing the episodes from Youtube or more tightly controlling the content will slow or stop us. I'm not sure that's really the case, I'm more in favor of the view that they're getting ready to release the episodes on DvD format, in which case they should remove the episodes from Youtube.
The only thing that could cause the brony fanbase to waver is if the show were PCed into an unwatchable mess like generations 1-3.

From what I've heard, Hasbro has to occasionally show that they're making some attempt to protect their IP from time to time, or they'll lose their ability to go after more important cases. Like if some other company started selling MLP toys. If they completely disregard copyright on situations like this, then it'll be harder for them to have a case when their copyright is being challenged by something that will eat into their profits.

But like I said, the smart thing would still be to set up their on youtube account (or let the Hub do it) where all the episodes are uploaded to. Have that channel get partnered and make money off of the ads and increased toy sale. Not to mention that people will probably still by the DVDs.

I think the problem usually is that if they want to have licensing agreements with other countries, they need to be able to offer them "exclusive" content for TV.

For example, I believe that South Park's creators have gone on the record as saying they'd happily offer access to the episodes for people all over the world, but because it would be in violation of certain contracts, they can't.

I assume setting up a channel on Youtube that offers the episodes for free would take away Hasbro's ability to negotiate with international channels for a good deal, or might violate what deals are already in place.

Putting up a token resistance to people uploading episodes onto Youtube is probably cheaper than losing international TV ad revenue.

You do make a good point about licensing agreements. And I'm hoping that the token resistance thing is what Hasbro is doing. Like only occasionally taking down a set of videos. And judging by the fact that they haven't been taking down videos constantly, it does seem that way.

I think our next main fic focus should be Through the Eyes of Another Pony.

Updates slow and doesn't have many chapters but they are all looooong.
Apparently these first fifteen planned chapters are just Part I.
Awesomesauce.

Since the end of FoE, the only long fanfics I've been reading have been the FoE side stories and Allegrezza (shipping story, Octavia and Scratch).

Nice to get to know Granny Smith a bit better too.
I wish that they had mentioned zap apples before, or had them in the background or something if they were that important to Ponyville... but maybe they only appear every few years or so?
Apple Bloom was acting as though it was her first time at an actual harvest.

A map!
And history.
I love getting more lore about the MLP world.
Now if we could just learn some more about the princesses, Discord, and the history of Equestria.

This story does raise some interesting questions.
Celestia and Luna have been around and ruling for at least a thousand years, and that the three tribes were responsible for the creation of Equestria and Canterlot as well as the establishment of the GGG. Before Equestria, the Unicorns handled the Day and Night, so the Princesses weren't around yet.
All that's fine and good, but in the latest episode, when Granny Smith was at Canterlot, it looked more like a fair ground than an established city, save for the stone structures.

Well, that WAS almost a hundred years ago. I did like that the styles and appearances of clothes and buildings seemed old and different too.

It's quite possible that Celestia and Luna were around during the founding of Equestria. They simply didn't directly intervene with the lives of the pony tribes until Discord started spreading chaos.

As for Canterlot, it's not uncommon for large cities to have a park or fair grounds for special events. They could have just been in that area of the city.

I didn't mean to imply they didn't exist yet, just that they weren't handling the Day and Night.

I suppose that could have been it, and a fair would explain why they had come to Canterlot to begin with,

Is anyone else perturbed by the lack of Pinkie Pie-centric episodes this season? I mean, she seems to be strangely absent from this season, even as a secondary character...

They seem to be handling the character centric episodes in streaks and they just haven't gotten to Pinkie yet. Though the episode this saturday stars her. According to the synopsis, she'll be babysitting for the Cakes' kids.

I... I finally came back onto AW. I hadn't even signed in since October I guess. My life has been consumed by ponies.

Alright, alright. Deep breaths.
Try to maintain a calm while you go through withdrawal. You may suffer some minor depression but that's normal (I went through withdrawal in October myself). Now only MOST of my time is consume by MLP-related things instead of all of it.

:p

I'm male... I'm 25... and I hope you are all happy with yourselves... You've turned me into some sort of Stereotype... I just know it. I've managed to watch all available episodes in the span of two days and now I can't wait for the next...

Is there something wrong with me? Have I been infected? Its one thing to have enjoyed the original Precure... but this... This is entirely different! I think I've become something called a Brony? Quick purify me now!

Alright melodrama aside I must say I'm impressed and a little scared at just how appealing a show aimed at an audience of 4 year old girls could possible be enjoyable... but the humor in it is disturbingly funny...

But is it me or do all the main cast seem to be just barely on the sane side of sanity and are always teetering on the edge of total and complete Machiavellian lunacy? If not, at least they are well on their way of being entirely dis-associative... Its both distressing and rather fun.

/end of MLP Introduction post.

Oh and by the way Rainbow Dash rocks.
