Been around a while but still think of myself as "new" (or maybe just gently used).

sociology/psychology and human behavior (special focus on serial and multiple murder)
history: various with a focus on ancient european and military
multi-cultural religions and mythologies
being female
being in the US Navy (cold warrior and other activities)
>>general stuff
>>anti-submarine warfare
>>security clearances
>>assorted weapons and combat training (inc. making weapons out of nothing)
being a disabled female veteran (mental and some physical disabilities)
being batshit crazy - i'm not certifiable, i'm certified and have the papers to prove it
>>PTSD: military
>>PTSD - MST (military sexual trauma)
>>depression, borderline personality disorder (self-harm, cutter), anxiety, agoraphobia etc
>>memory issues and cognitive deficits
>>psych meds and some side effects
being homeless (and living in the forest)
service dogs
motorcycles and bikers
construction
drinking
bartending
living on the plains (western ND/SD, MT, WY)
hunting - deer, elk, antelope
self-taught, semi-professional artist and photographer (meaning i sell some but not enough to live on)
bad puns and smartass comments

I always think I don’t know much about anything, but in the unlikely event any of these might be useful;

Cooking (English/traditional)
Living in rural England
Running a small business in England
English Industrial revolution, c1750-1850
English ceramics c1780-1900 (this incorporates social history, eating & drinking habits and fashions, trade, import & export of raw materials and finished products.)
English canals.
English folk music.
Being boring :(

I won’t necessarily know things off the top of my head, but I’ve got a lot of reference and antiquarian books. Except about the last thing, obviously.

Pine-delice, what you think is boring sounds mighty interesting to me, probably others too.

On the off-chance anybody needs input in the following, I'm available:

  • History, particularly Roman Empire, ancient Near East, medieval to a lesser extent
  • Religion, mostly the Abrahamics: the theologies and histories thereof
  • OCD (funny how so many of us are writers?)
  • Horses, care and feeding of
  • Equestrians, care and feeding of
  • Politics (bleccchh!), international relations (as long as economics aren't involved)
  • Culture/history/politics of the "long" 1960s - Hippies, Vietnam, acid, Beatles, Malcolm X, all that good stuff
  • The effects of psychedelic drugs (almost all second-hand info; otherwise I'd be much more interesting)
  • Genetics
  • The American South (Am native. Send help.)

Stage Combat - Unarmed, Quarterstaff, Single Sword

I took a stage fighting intensive this summer, and learned a ton about stage combat techniques and how to make visually interesting, dramatically exciting fights onstage. The three subjects of the intensive were unarmed combat, quarterstaff, and single sword (more like a fencing rapier than a broadsword - think the Three Musketeers)

If you ever need thoughts or ideas on these forms of fight, I might have a tip or two that's helpful to you. I should stress, however, that this was STAGE combat, which, although it's based off historical forms, has much more to do with safety and entertainment than it does with accuracy. Stage combat is all about making it look like you're hurting someone without ever being at risk of actually hurting anyone. It's also about doing wicked crazy cool looking stuff that is fun to watch but probably would get you killed if you tried it on a real battlefield. But, considering a novel fight is sometimes just about being fun to read, maybe the crazy-cool-impractical stuff is what you'd want to hear about.

PM me with questions, if you have any!

- History, particularly of England, Ireland and Scotland. I have more experience with pre-Victorian era: Tudor, medieval, and Anglo-Saxon, back to the Celts. I'm not terrible with the rest of Europe, but Roman times is my non-British concentration.
- Jacobite era
- Beadwork/needlepoint/art/photography
- Religion - Wicca and various new age subjects/neopaganism, druidry, Tarot, etc.
- The effects of LSD - dare I say it's first hand knowledge? That was long, long ago, way past any statute of limitations.
- Genealogical research (found my father after 15 years, LOTS of research on my own tree and others)
- South Florida in the 1980s and 1990s
- Dragons
- Ireland, Scotland and England culture, traditions, history, language in present day (many trips, even wrote two travel guides)
- Travel planning in the modern age
- being an only child
- being raised by a single mother (poor)
- Accounting/Financial Reporting/CPA
- Living as an American in Cuban Miami
- Adjunct teacher at college (accounting)
- Living with someone with fibromyalgia
- Painting with Photoshop
- Living with 30 cats (when I was a child)
- Stage combat training
- Performing at Renaissance Festivals
- LARPing and Role Playing games, as well as many board games
- Celtic folk music and musicians, both modern and traditional
- COSplay, scifi conventions (Dragoncon, etc.)
- Running an art show booth at festivals, being an independent artist, jeweler (beads), photographer
- Trying to have a first baby at 42, trying IUI several times and failing, then going through adoption process
- History and evolution of languages
- Living in college towns (Gainesville, FL and Morgantown, WV)
- Being a perpetual college student (14 years gave me a Masters and Bach in Accounting and most of a Bach in Fine Arts)
- Living in Dearborn, MI in the 1970s (though I was a child, so my perspective is skewed)
- Celtic mythology and the art associated with it. I dabble in many mythologies, from Greco-Roman to Indian to Egyptian, Russian, Japanese, etc.
- City girl moved to the country for the first time (going through this now!!!)

Me, too! I've taken similar training, though it was years ago. I took SAFD (Society of American Fight Directors) courses for our Renaissance Festival - living chess game and all that stuff. Same areas, but add rapier :)

I did epee fencing for a few years, and one of the things emphasised is the timing of the movement of sword hand and feet - as in start to extend hand, then front foot begins move and the foot movement finishes with the full extension of the arm.

Just curious - what is taught about hand/foot movement timing in stage fighting?

A lot, about hand and foot movement! Footwork is very important, as that is how you have balance and control.

Exactly :)

Down the years I've seen some well balanced swordplay on TV/film and some stuff that was annoyingly useless in terms of timing - lots of effort and acting and drama, but swordplay that sucked. Glad to know it is taught properly (even if not everyone learns well...... :) ).

Took me a while to figure out what stuff folks would actually be interested in knowing. I finally came up with this list:

-Gardening (Includes alternative methods of planting such as as small space/vertical/traditional/no-dig/container planting; growing from seed; saving and storing seeds for the next year; non-toxic/organic growing methods; seasonal growing; worm farming; composting and manure usage; urban gardening environments; some sustainable agriculture)

-Homesteading skills (This includes practical knowledge of cutting up a rabbit, fowl, wallaby or lamb carcass and using all of it's parts; how to kill and process a chicken for the freezer; baking breads, pies and cakes, including sourdough recipes; cooking in general; fermentation, including kombucha, yogurt, kefir, some cheeses, wine, and mead; the care and cleaning of cast iron; butter making; preserving the harvest; feeding chickens on a budget and how to use them in your garden.)

-Limited crafting skills (Includes hand sewing for quilting, clothing repair; making ragdolls; crocheting baby blankets, potholders and small bags; knitting flat pieces.)

There are probably other things, but these cover quite a lot already. :p

New Here

- Languages/Linguistics, I blog about them here http://lingualism.quora.com/
My speciality is Romance languages. I speak Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, and have studied a little bit of a few more. I could help you a little with Latin, but probably not provide a reliable translation. Beyond that, I just have a lot of overall experience in the history and characteristics of languages. I've studied far more than what are listed here, and if I can't help then I know plenty people that can even for really obscure languages. I'd be very glad to help construct a language for your story as I've done it before and I've learned a little Na'vi, Esperanto, and Mando'ade. I can provide some input for dialects and accents of English as well. (I also speak less Mandarin and German.)

- Cajun culture/language
I'm only half Cajun but I deeply care about the culture and language. I speak Cajun French and am less adept in Cajun culture such as cooking, but I would still love to help.

-Teenagery/High school
Currently am a teen and I try to step back and explain it to others from time to time. I see a lot of YA writers today not understanding the dynamics of social media in teenagers lives. I'm a pretty dynamic person in school, too, so my friends vary from all across the hierarchy and horizon.

-American culture/history/accents/dialects
I'm currently enrolled in a college level US history course and I've always loved history. I'm also fairly decent at explaining our different cultures and characteristics, though, and blog about it here. http://understandingtheusa.quora.com/ I'll also quietly mention I know a bit about Latin/South American cultures as I speak Spanish and have a lot of friends from those places, but I've only been to one country and I'm not Latino myself so that's my extent.

-American South
It's where I've lived my entire life.

-Photography
A hobby I enjoy

-Boating
I live on a lake.

-Lacrosse
I play it

-Guitar/Mandolin/Uke/Other stringed instruments
Not an expert but I can provide some input

-Atheism
I'm an atheist and I've debated a ton. I have decent knowledge on different religious beliefs of the world, but I'd go to someone else first besides me.

- Alabama, Mississippi, South Carolina

I hope to reap in the benefits here and provide my own!

I know: Islam, Arabic, Muslims, and Arab culture. Obviously, one person's perspective is limited, but if you have any questions, feel free to PM, and I'll do my best.

My areas of expertise are:

1. living in the San Francisco Bay Area my whole life. I can provide on-the-ground details that you can't get from Google street view, such as, nobody calls it Frisco.

2. US immigration law. I've been a paralegal in this area for 10 years. For example, just getting married does not automatically grant the foreign spouse a green card. 100 years ago, it did, but they made the rules harder.

3. Japan - second hand. My husband is from there.

4. music and esp. music perception. I have the lab-verified brain disorder known as "perfect pitch" or "absolute pitch" and I've participated in a couple of DNA research studies. I've collected a lot of articles about autism, memory, how the brain processes auditory input, etc. Plus I can name that note.

Not sure if it would be of use but I'll always lend a hand with what I can.

Gaming, have been an almost obsessive gamer for as long as I remember (may not mean much to most stories but you never know) and have delved into the development side.
Music. Listen to all sorts, been in numerous bands myself and studied at university to be a sound engineer.
Psychosis. This one I know inside out having been suffering most of my life with a condition many have tried to diagnose but failed.
Martial Arts. Black belt in Shotokan Karate, assorted knowledge levels of numerous other styles I've dabbled with, two years of Jeet Kune Do.
Welsh Valleys. Born and bred in Wales before moving to Bristol.
Etymology. Love it, read up on it all the time, not a professional by any stretch of the imagination but I'll help out in any way I can.

I am a forensic psychologist with decades of experience working with criminals in prison settings and on parole or probation.

I have a very good understanding of many religions (B.A. Degree Religion/Anthropology). Eastern Orthodox is a specialty but to show variety, so is Spiritualism.

I am a twenty-something American living in Glasgow, Scotland, so I could talk a lot about elements of modern Scottish life that are foreign to Americans. I also know about:
-ADHD (diagnosed), Autism, and how they intersect with each other and intelligence
-Protestant Christian doctrine (I am Presbyterian and work for the Church of Scotland)
-how to teach environmental ecology to children
-literally anything about the mechanics of swimming, from the hydrodynamics to how it is taught to the training of Olympic athletes
-what it's like to attend a women's college and how gender and sexuality play out in an environment that is all cis women, trans women, and trans men

Hit me up if you have any questions!
