I can't figure out whether googol/googolplex should have "of" when quantifying a noun.

A googol pirates, or a googol OF pirates?

A googolplex ninjas, or a googolplex OF ninjas?

I haven't been able to find something definitive online. What say you, Grammar & Syntax hivemind?

I'd go with googol/googolplex books, like a dozen books, ten books, or a billion books. And now the word 'books' seems so weird...

Unless you've got multiple googolplexes of books. :D

If I've told you once, I've told you a googol times: You need the article. :Lecture:

Well, maybe I didn't say it quite that many times, but it was a lot. :D

Surely you good google how the word "googol" is used in mathematical literature, and discover what the preferred method is. It does represent a specific number, but then again, so does "dozen".

Me, I'd prefer to use the word "shitload".

My googling of googoling provided mixed results. :D (I couldn't compare search results numbers because, while I can specifically search for "googol of" [noun], I can't search for "googol" [noun]. And most of the time "googol" isn't used quantifiably, which doesn't help.)

Thanks, everyone!

If you omit the article, you'll be lucky if one person in a thousand knows what you're even trying to say. Sometimes it's right to be wrong, and wrong to be right.

I wouldn't use the term myself.

The fact that a nine year old who may possibly have been cute thought it up doesn't redeem it.

It's cumbersome. It lacks all semblance of numerosity and it's completely arbitrary.

Perfectly acceptable words indicating non-specific but gigantic numbers are zillion, gazillion, squillion which have the virtue of actually sounding like numbers and you don't have the problem of wondering whether to use a possessive article.

If you feel the need to be absolutely specific that you're referring to a one with 100 zeros, then ten duotrigintillion is a perfectly good candidate.

It's 'a googol books' just as it is 'ten books' or 'a dozen books'.
