The Glasgow School of Art, a landmark Art Nouveau building and working school designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, caught fire yesterday.

No one was hurt. The fire looks alarming in photos but according to the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service the main structure and most of its contents were saved.

It is not yet known how much damage has been done to the school library, considered one of the finest examples of an Art Nouveau interior in the world.

The UK government has pledged to help rebuild the school.

Been waiting for news on this all day. It's a very important building and thankfully they have managed to save 90% of it.

I pity the poor students whose exam work has gone up in flames though.

Historic Scotland conservators/monument inspectors have been working in the school over the weekend, and English Heritage's chairman Simon Thurley seems to be going to involved (he led the team that conserved Windsor Palace after their fire.)

If anyone would like to give a donation (or thinks they could volunteer their craft skills), there is a fundraising page of GsoA's website.

What a terrible loss. Glad that much of the stuff was able to be saved, but still . . . =\
