Ann Cleeves's Vera novels (and the TV adaptations) were the first thing that came to mind. We've also got Reginald Hill's Dalziel as the male equivalent.
Other than that I agree with what's been said already - I prefer interesting characters to Barbie dolls, and when every character in the book fancies the MC it irritates me, but equally I don't like the stereotype of unattractive=clumsy etc. Also the Twilight syndrome of 'I'm so ugly and clumsy and yet everybody still fancies me'.
So basically if the character is just real and genuine and well rounded (which I'm sure she would be) it would work for me.
