So many commiserations, so little time. Sorry to hear about thepicpic, seun and SJAB, but hey, introvertedwife, congrats!
I guess I am still afraid of saying too much about the email I received, but to say this as judiciously as possible, I am, for the moment, still in the game. I was told something that really makes me feel less anxious, but it doesn't mean anything real yet.

They are on fire, lately. Got my R yesterday. I had already started an overhaul, so it's completely fine. I've had 3 partials, 1 full and somewhere around 50 rejections on this one, so when I'm finally sick of it (or run out of agents), I'll self pub. And focus on the lessons learned for the next one!

And that's me out. Don't know why he bothered telling me there was "enthusiasm" about the book before he even got there only to say that it's not really what AR is wanting to do right now.
It makes sense that AR's plans/goals/likes would be changing now. I'd take the enthusiasm noted as complimentary.
Sorry to hear your news, WriterJosh. It's always worse when they say positive things and get your hopes up (which seems to be a general hobby in the publishing industry). If it makes you feel any better, the manuscript they turned down from me went all the way to the acquisitions committee with one of the big four (at least that's what my editor told me), and all I got was a form rejection from AR. I think they've got a very strong idea about what they want and are turning down everything else. Or maybe my manuscript just sucks, who knows

I'm sorry to hear it, WriterJosh. Like MLM, the MS I submitted here got a long way with a Big Five before getting an R, and here I got the form rejection. Keep moving forward, and know that they didn't lie. Someone really was excited to read your full and put you up to the consulting editor.
Also, publishing is crazy sometimes, don't take one no as an indication of the quality of your story. It's not.

Ah, give 'em credit for being nice. There is absolutely no way for them to tell you "not interested" in a way that will make you happy to hear it. At least they're passing along all the good news they had (people liked your book) along with the bad news.

Wow, looks like they are powering through the remaining subs. It sounds like they know what they are looking for, and anything that doesn't fit is getting rejected :-( keep at it though! there are lots of markets.

DrFaerieGodmother - I've revamped the novel since then, and it's much stronger. Assumed a rejection and moved on long ago. Nov 2013 seems a long, long time ago in novel time.
Boy Howdy, Flight Heart. I actually rewrote most of mine since the submission date (AGAIN, apparently, I'm a fan of rewriting) as well. On the plus side, it's in better shape, and you NEVER know when things will suddenly go right for a novel.
