not here, I swear
I think I only lilt melodiously when reading poetry (which has to be done aloud in any case - reading a poem on a page is only half the experience. Have you ever tried reading Milton out loud? It's like chocolate for your ears). The rest of the time, in my accent, 'power shower' is 'par shar' and 'owl' is 'aul'....

But if you would like me to read poetry at you...

Yes please! *bats eyelashes*

And yes, I have. Actually, Paradise Lost is one of my all-time favorites. I'm even loosely basing a novel on it.

On the subject of EZ-Freeze: I have lived in Aberdeen for nearly ten years. I can cope with the cold ;)

And rather than giving you a poem you know, I'd prefer to give you one you don't. Have you ever read any Louis MacNeice?

This is one of my all-time favourite poems. It's called 'The Sunlight on the Garden'.

The sunlight on the garden
Hardens and grows cold,
We cannot cage the minute
Within its nets of gold,
When all is told
We cannot beg for pardon.

Our freedom as free lances
Advances towards its end;
The earth compels, upon it
Sonnets and birds descend;
And soon, my friend,
We shall have no time for dances.

The sky was good for flying
Defying the church bells
And every evil iron
Siren and what it tells:
The earth compels,
We are dying, Egypt, dying

And not expecting pardon,
Hardened in heart anew,
But glad to have sat under
Thunder and rain with you,
And grateful too
For sunlight on the garden.

Jolly old England
Ah, poetry is being mentioned! *runs and hides as flashbacks of GCSE English begin*

Make it stop... *hugs teddy bear* Make it stop...

Would you like another? My *other* favourite MacNeice poem? In some respects, it's even sadder and more beautiful...

(I like MacNeice - I wrote my postgrad Masters thesis on him).

I would love another one. I'm going offline now, but it will be a welcome sight when I find my way back.

A little bit of background: Louis MacNeice died in 1963, after contracting pneumonia. After a long period in the doldrums, his poetry was returning to form (his last anthology, The Burning Perch, is well worth seeking out). His last poem was called 'Thalassa', and it was only discovered and published posthumously.

Run out the boat, my broken comrades;
Let the old seaweed crack, the surge
Burgeon oblivious of the last
Embarkation of feckless men,
Let every adverse force converge --
Here we must needs embark again.

Run up the sail, my heartsick comrades;
Let each horizon tilt and lurch --
You know the worst: your wills are fickle,
Your values blurred, your hearts impure
And your past life a ruined church --
But let your poison be your cure.

Put out to sea, ignoble comrades,
Whose record shall be noble yet;
Butting through scarps of moving marble
The narwhal dares us to be free;
By a high star our course is set,
Our end is Life. Put out to sea.

I took my little budgie Blueberry (the one who is an honorary cantinaite) to the vet (yes, vets take pets to other vets. Especially ones not practicing medicine like me). He'd had loose stools and I wanted to get him a physical and a fecal and maybe other stuff.

Well, I was not impressed. The history part was crap all, he couldn't catch my bird and finally I was like 'I will catch him' (because he doesnt need to fly around and around the room every time you fail. I told you he's not stupid and has lots of experience avoiding being caught. I also told you he'd shoot for the gap first chance he got. Sheesh.

So while I'm waiting for the vet to return I'm chatting to Blueberry and I just happen to notice his feathers aren't sitting right and too much skin is showing and his birdie finger looks too big for his size. So I look and look but while his feathers are ruffled, it does seem like the finger is swollen. (Primaries come off the fingers if that helps. If not, google bird skeleton or wing anatomy).

Crap. So when the other vet returns I ask a question then point this out. He looks and looks but doesnt get my bird out. He says it's most likely just the feathers but keep an eye on it and is clearly is a rush. Fine. I don't want you to handle my bird again ever I think.

So I get wee Blueberry home, give him a minute to settle and get him out. His fingers on that side are much fatter than the other side and it doesnt seem like a normal swelling :( Now I'm worried he has cancer rather than a freak injury. I'm going to see how it looks tomorrow and find another vet.

I need to announce more happy news.

Careful, Blueberry would bite your cat ;) And while biting, he'd do a quick twist before letting go. He's a bit of a meanie when it comes to his personal space.

And thanks folks. Expect obnoxious birdie videos this week.
