I have been reading the blog as this company has developed--shows real promise!

J. M. Hochstetler, author of the American Patriot Series, has built a
new publishing house, Sheaf House.

You can check out her blog here.

http://publishingdream.blogspot.com/

She has said she'll be putting together her publishing list for 2008
shortly, so you might want to subscribe to her blog to catch the
earliest calls for submission.

The working title is */ Adventures in Mothering: Teachable Moments for
Moms. /*

* Description and Purpose: *

It is ironic and wondrously true that while we're helping our young
ones
grow up, God is using them to grow us up in unique ways that make life
and motherhood a continual adventure.

Mothering is an adventure in personal growth. We tend to think of the
challenge simply being what to teach our children; but it is often what
they teach us, reveal to us about ourselves that astonishes and
admonishes us to grow and change. God uses these little ones to
continue
his plan for our growth, and if you ask any mom, there's nothing like a
little one to grow our patience, our love, our ability to see our
weaknesses as well as our strengths. As well as our children, God may
use other challenges during the parenting years. We'll open a mom's
eyes
to see what God is doing in her life, not just the life of her child.
To
see that God's parenting of us goes on in our parenting of our
children.
Often in the daily grind of diapers and baby food, we neglect our souls
and personal growth. But the two don't have to be exclusive, they're
hand in hand if we're attentive to what our wee ones are telling us
about ourselves. It's an extraordinary opportunity for growth.

* Our purpose is to challenge moms to embrace the adventure of
discovering who they are becoming in the midst of their mothering
years.
* * That their "growing up" is ongoing. We want them to discover the
richness - and the surprising insights - that mothering is bringing to
their lives; how the experience of mothering is shaping who they are. *

This is not another discipline book, not another "this is what you need
to do," but rather "what are my reactions telling me about me"? It's
reflective. Where's the adventure in mothering and how can we learn
from
and appreciate it? Please familiarize yourself with other MOPS books to
see the MOPS tone. We want to address the mom who doesn't know Jesus as
well as the mom who does, and moms in their early 20's as well as those
in their 40's.

The book will be approximately 7" wide by 9" tall and roughly 200
pages.
It will include a variety of fun, helpful and inspiring side-bars, and
we have contracted a writer to provide the supplemental side-bar
material.

The sections of the book will follow the six needs of moms that have
been identified by MOPS International and form the basis of the MOPS
flagship book / What Every Mom Needs / by Elisa Morgan and Carol
Kuykendall. The six needs will be re-titled to fit the "adventures"
theme (working sub-titles):

* Owning my Adventure (Identity) *
* Stretching and Training (Growth) *
* Climbing Partners (Relationship) *
* Guidebooks and Gear (Help) *
* View from the Summit (Perspective) *
* Expanding My Limits (Hope) *

* The Plan *

We would love to receive at least one story from you for inclusion in
this book that will be vigorously promoted to the MOPS mom audience
(105,000 mothers of preschoolers) by MOPS, and to the "outside world"
via marketing by our publisher, Revell/Baker Publishing Group. We are
looking for first person narratives, of 300 to 1,500 words, that tell
an
unforgettable story with a heart-grabbing point with which most any mom
can identify. Tell about a time you became vividly aware of how you
were
growing, changing, becoming as a person during your years of mothering.
A time when, because of an interaction or circumstance with your child
you realized new truths about yourself. The story need not be confined
to the preschool years of mothering, although most of the stories
selected will deal with those years.

MOPS International will pay $200 per story included in the book, as
well
as include an author biography and website if applicable. We are
seeking
original content. Please do not send previously published pieces that
are not spot-on written to this request. * The submission deadline is
Friday, August 3, 2007. Please submit entries to [email protected]
and
include your name, address, phone
number, email address, and the section into which your story fits best.
* Please also send your questions to this address (rather than my email
address). Jackie Alvarez, editorial coordinator, and I will watch this
mailbox carefully.

We will respond within 60 days as to whether your story(s) will be
included in the book.

Thank you so much for considering this adventure!

Sincerely,

Beth Lagerborg

Relief: A Quarterly Christian Expression http://www.reliefjournal.com -- a market for poetry, creative nonfiction, and short stories.

I just read the following on their website: "Submissions for Issue 5 will be closing at Midnight on August 1st, so get your submissions in now! We're currently experiencing a bit of a summer lull for this submissions period, so get your work in! We can't publish it if it's sitting on your hard drive."

So it might be a good time to submit!

Of course, this "summer lull" bit was posted after I sent my submission in; don't know that that bodes well for me....

Deadlines Approach for First Novel, First Book Contests

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO — Unpublished authors have less than two months
to submit entries to the Christian Writers Guild's 2007 "Operation
First Novel" and "Operation First Book
" (nonfiction) contests. The
entry deadline is September 19 for Operation First Book; the deadline
is October 3 for Operation First Novel.

The fiction contest, co-sponsored by Tyndale House Publishers, offers
unpublished authors the opportunity to have a first novel published
by Tyndale, plus receive a $20,000 advance. Entries must be original
works of fiction between 75,000 and 100,000 words.

New for 2007 is Operation First Book (nonfiction) , co-sponsored by
Harvest House Publishers. Rather than a complete manuscript, this
contest calls for a detailed nonfiction book proposal. The winner
will receive $10,000, and Harvest House will consider the book for
publication.

The contest is open to Christian Writers Guild students or annual
members who have not yet had a book (fiction or nonfiction) published
by a royalty publishing house. Those who have used a subsidy
publisher or print-on-demand company are not considered "published."

Winners of the 2007 contests will be announced January 31, 2008
during the opening session of the Guild's annual Writing for the Soul
conference in Colorado Springs at the luxurious Broadmoor hotel. The
prizes will be awarded by Christian Writers Guild owner Jerry B.
Jenkins, author of the best-selling Left Behind series.

Previous Operation First Novel winners are (2004) Jan Watson of
Lexington, KY, for Troublesome Creek; (2005) Terry Barnes of
Tonganoxie, KS, for In Everything Give Thanks; and (2006) Tom Pawlik
of Paddock Lake, WI, for Vanish.

Rules and contest details — including how to join the Guild as an
annual member — are available at
www.christianwriter sguild.com/ contest.asp.

For more than 40 years, the Christian Writers Guild has helped
aspiring writers develop and sharpen their skills. Now under the
leadership of best-selling writer Jerry B. Jenkins, the Guild offers
students 21st century correspondence courses — for adults and youth

with practical instruction under the mentoring of a distinguished,
seasoned professional.

Information is available at www.ChristianWriter sGuild.com or toll-
free at 1-866-495-5177.

The Chicken Soup family is preparing a serving especially for the middle school through high school student, and we are looking for stories. It is often taken for granted—by parents, teachers, and students themselves—that students know the best study strategies appropriate for them as they progress through school. Many do not understand that we all learn differently and that different strategies are appropriate for different learning styles. Students also vary in their strengths, such as being “book smart,” “people smart,” or strong in logical skills. Many students do not realize the importance of “feeding” their brains, having a regular daily routine, the benefits of writing down one’s goals, having an organized locker, or having a proper study area. Students need to learn various note taking strategies that fit the subject/topic or their learning style. Different memory strategies can help students retain information short term and long term. Learning how to develop good study habits for daily work and assessments as well as learning how to handle stress are equally important. Students who feel empowered about their abilities and future success can attain their educational goals.

The Chicken Soup for the Soul Study Guide (working title) will cater to the soul of ten to sixteen-year-olds, their parents, and their teachers. Jack Canfield and Mark Hansen are teaming up with educators and authors of Study Skills Tool Kit LuAnn Warner-Prokos, Tami Pleasanton, and Elizabeth Mulligan to serve up stories and advice that help make the learning experience easier for students every day of the school year. Their advice can be referred to throughout the school year and revisited subsequent years.

We are looking for true stories that will touch the souls of the reader and help them improve their grades at school or reinforce that they are doing something right with their studies. Stories of students of this age group or from parents and teachers who have incredible lessons to share will inspire students to learn better strategies appropriate for them, motivate them to be the best student they could be, or instill a sense of faith in themselves.

Topics will include, but not limited to:
Learning style Summarizing
How you are smart Thinking skills and memory techniques
Your learning profile (where/how you like to study) Concentration
Setting goals
Time and stress management
Organization skills
Test and exam preparation
How to find success in the classroom Computers, research, and writing
Note taking

Please share your inspirational, true experiences of 1000 words or less. You may submit as many stories as you would like. For each story selected to be published in the book, a 50-word biography will be included about the author and a permission fee of $200 will be paid. The submission deadline is September 30th 2007.

Email submissions are strongly preferred. Send stories with your home, address, phone number, and email address on the manuscript through our website at www.chickensoup.com. Please select The Chicken Soup for the Soul Study Guide as the book title.

Material will not be returned. Due to the volume of stories we receive, we are unable to respond to each contribution. Finalists, only, will be notified prior to publication and permission to print will be requested.

Subject: [CynthiaSterling] Market News for week of August 19, 2007

This week I began my look at all the publisher Spotlights from the RWA National Conference in Dallas last month. So if you have friends that are interested, let them know they can sign up for the newsletter. And as always, the archives are available at Yahoogroups. com if you miss anything.

First up, Sourcebooks.

The Spotlight on Sourcebooks was an energetic presentation by President and CEO Dominique Raccah and Editor Deb Werksman. Ms. Raccah spoke first, and gave some background on Sourcebooks. She founded the company in 1987 in an upstairs bedroom of her home in Napierville, Illinois. Sourcebooks currently publishes 250 titles a year and has 75 employees. It is one of the top ten independent publishers in the company and the largest woman-owned publisher in America. Sourcebooks has had ten New York Times bestselling titles.

Ms. Raccah spoke at length about what she feels separates Sourcebooks from other publishers. She said they publish careers and authors, not just books, and have a long-term focus. They also put together a marketing plan for every author. She gave the example of an author Sourcebooks took on, Ted Fisk. He’s the author of the Fisk Guide to Colleges, which was published by Random House. The book was the number four college guide in the country when Fisk came to Sourcebooks. Through repackaging and a promotional push, Sourcebooks took the guide to number one. They also came up with a plan for Fisk to produce a number of complimentary materials that could be marketed with the guide to increase his market share.

Ms. Raccah also spoke about a Sourcebooks fiction author, Michael Malone. He’s a southern novelist who has been previously published by Knopf and Harper. When he came to Sourcebooks they bought out his backlist and reprinted it. They developed a five-year marketing plan for his new books and sent him on a pre-launch book tour to meet book buyers before the book was even available. His first new book for Sourcebooks was a New York Times bestseller. “We’re known by our customers for innovation and marketing, she said. Thirty percent of the company is devoted to sales and marketing. They also have an active sub-rights department.

Ms. Raccah said that whenever Sourcebooks enters a new category, they go into it with the intention of being at the top of the category. She cited their experience entering the crowded calendar market and becoming one of the top sellers, as well as their successful foray into children’s book publishing. Now they are making the same commitment to being a top seller of romance fiction.

In 1997, Sourcebooks bought a company called Casablanca, which had published a bestselling book, 1001 Ways to Be Romantic. Today Sourcebooks Casablanca is the largest nonfiction romance publisher in the world, with books that are especially popular at Valentine’s day. In 2004, Sourcebooks published Mr. Darcy Takes a Wife, by Linda Berdoll. This very sexy sequel to Pride and Prejudice has been very successful. That success led Sourcebooks to target the romance fiction market.

Editor Deb Werksman spoke next. Sourcebooks Casablanca is launching its romance fiction list this fall with a mixture of reprints and original fiction by both new and familiar authors. They’ll publish two Georgette Heyer reprints, a new Regency by a debut author, and a time travel romance by an established author. In the Spring they’ll release two more Georgette Heyers, a women’s fiction novel and a collection of erotica that was previously a bestseller overseas, a paranormal by a previously unpublished author and one by an established author, a historical romance reprint, and a contemporary romance with a Navy Seal hero by a debut author.

Sourcebooks is looking for single title romance fiction between 85,000 and 120,000 words – contemporary, historical (any time period to 1900), romantic suspense, humor, erotic romance, paranormal and women’s fiction. Ms. Werksman said she wants to fall in love with the story’s hero, or, alternatively, fall more in love with her husband because of the story. She wants to relate to the heroine. She likes heroines who are realistic and even a bit unusual – no perfect twenty-two year olds. She wants to be taken to another world, “a wholly conceived environment for the characters. She said authors should be able to sum up their book in a couple of sentences so that the sales people and account buyers can quickly grasp the story.

Sourcebooks accepts submissions from both agented and unagented authors. She prefers email submissions and would like either a simple query or a synopsis with the full manuscript. Authors should receive confirmation of their submission within 21 days and her goal is to reply in 12-18 weeks. Detailed guidelines are available at http://www.sourcebooks.com/content/ authors_romance_ submission_ guidelines. asp

Feel free to pass along this newsletter and to encourage others to sign up to receive it. If you reprint or forward the newsletter, all I ask is that I be given credit for it. Anyone can sign up by sending a blank email to cynthiasterling- subscribe@ yahoogroups. com

Looks like this is a group compiling a self-pub book---

Background and Guidelines for DAILY DEVOTIONS FOR WRITERS:
Needed by December 1st, 2007

Daily Devotions for Writers , a 365-day devotional book, written by writers for writers about writing. Each devotion must be about writing: the stresses, problems, joys, frustrations, blessings of the writing life. Please submit one or more 250-word devotions, must include a short prayer, and a quote or Bible verse.

The members of The Writing Academy, a small group of dedicated Christian writers from all over the country, meet once a year in Minnesota. Now, with members living in twenty-two states and Canada, they will write and self-publish the Writer’s Devotion book, all the proceeds will support The Writing Academy. I am donating my services as collector and editor of all the devotions for this book as well.
Submissions must be a true, first-person story with a takeaway message. Similar to Daily Guideposts. No preaching or sermons, please. No pay. This book will be sold by all the members of the Writing Academy, your words will inspire thousands. All contributors will receive a byline and a short bio in the back of the book, and can purchase a copy at a 40-50% discount. (We do ask that if you sell the books at profit that you donate a portion of your proceeds to The Writing Academy.) Please send your devotions to me as soon as possible at patricialorenz@ juno.com

SPECIFIC GUIDELINES
1. Make sure every devotion is about writing or being a writer. Do not go over 250 words including prayer and quote.
2. No title.
2. Single space text. Do not send in color; please use Times New Roman font size 12.
3. Paragraphs, indent five spaces; do not double space between paragraphs.
4. Italicize prayer, don’t place in quotation marks. Place at end of devotion.
5. Bible verse, don’t place in quotation marks: Matthew 3:31, KJV, NIV (etc)
Person’s quote; don’t place in quotation marks. Include person's name who originated the quote. Only one quote or Bible verse per devotion. Feel free to select quotes from many different authors, (in addition to those verses you use from the Bible) but be sure to credit the author.
6.Your name, as you want it to appear, after the quote or Bible verse, on the bottom right.
Write in the first person only. Tell a story. Please do not preach or deliver a sermon. Use dialog, create a scene, show us your vulnerability. What did you have to learn? As a writer how did you screw up? How did frustration, struggle, pain, fear get you down? How did you pull yourself back up? Readers identify with people who have struggles and pain.

Please include a 30-50 word bio for the back of the book. Please send to patricialorenz@ juno.com

Here are a few idea starters for devotions about writing: HOW I BECAME A WRITER,
LIVING MY DREAM; DEFINING MOMENTS; FINDING MY VOICE; WRITING MENTORS; MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN THE WORLD; OVERCOMING OBSTACLES
A WRITER'S LIFE[ THE POWER OF PERSEVERANCE; INSIGHTS AND LESSONS; HOW I OVERCAME WRITER'S BLOCK; FIGHTING REJECTION SLIPS; HOW TO KEEP GOING WHEN EDITORS KEEP SAYING NO; THE JOYS I'VE RECEIVED AS A WRITER;
SETTING UP MY OFFICE ; BEGINNING THE TASK OF WRITING; THE MANY DIFFERENT FORMS OF WRITING; LEARNING TO SHARE MY WRITTEN WORDS; HOW I FIND TIME TO WRITE; WHY IT'S NOT ABOUT THE MONEY; WAYS TO TOUCH OTHERS; WHAT TO DO WHEN OUR FAMILIES DON'T APPRECIATE OUR WORK;
THE BLESSINGS I'VE RECEIVED AS A WRITER; THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY OF BEING A WRITER

Feel free to pass this on to your writer friends.
Warm regards, Patricia Lorenz

This week I'm continuing my look at Publisher Spotlights from the
Romance Writers of America convention with a look at Steeple
Hill/Love Inspired.
The spotlight on Steeple Hill and Love Inspired
was presented by Associate Senior Editor Krista Stroever and Editor
Melissa Endlich. 2007 is the 10th anniversary of the program. In 2008
they'll publish 10 category books a month, in addition to multiple
single titles each month. Many Steeple Hill authors are CBA
bestsellers and have garnered numerous awards.

Melissa spoke first about Love Inspired Historical, Steeple Hill's
newest line, launching in 2008. LI Historicals will publish two books
a month – one western and one non-western setting each month.
Inspirational readers seem to be more open to reading many different
time periods. In addition to western settings, the editors are
interested in all kinds of American settings – colonial, Civil War
and post Civil War, all the way up through World War II. They're also
interested in European settings and Biblical Fiction. Stories
featuring missionaries in exotic locations are welcome. Stories may
be dramatic and emotional, light-hearted, or suspenseful. But no
matter the setting or story, there can be no explicit sensuality,
graphic violence or language. Send submissions to Melissa or to
assistant editor Jessica Alvarez. They are both actively acquiring
for the line. 70,000 - 75,000 words.

Krista spoke about the Steeple Hill single title program. Like all
Steeple Hill books, these stories are based on Christian values. They
publish a wide variety of books – both contemporary and historical
romance and women's fiction, romantic suspense and thrillers and
relationship novels. They publish up to three titles each month. They
look more for established authors for this line. First time authors
usually start in Love Inspired and then move to the single title
books.

Steeple Hill Café is Christian Chick Lit. The editors are not really
looking for new authors here, as they have a full inventory. They
prefer established authors for this line.

Love Inspired category does four books a month. These are strong,
character-driven inspirational romance, 55,000-60,000 words. They
range from funny to heart-wrenching and feature men and women who
find true love in a Christ-centered relationship. They're looking for
stories set in smaller towns and cities, family-focused. Children are
welcome in these stories. They're interested in complex stories with
real conflicts. Situations may be dark and gritty. Characters may not
start out as Christians but are by the end of the book. Love Inspired
has published some chick-lit within the line, but these are only be
established LI authors. New authors should focus on romance stories.
Things that don't work as well: Hollywood settings, big city
settings, sports, dancers.

Love Inspired Suspense expanded from two books a month to four books
a month in February 2007. They are "very eagerly" looking for
inventory. This is a great opportunity for new authors. Readers here
are looking for "strong, highly dramatic, high-octane reads." There
are very few things you can't do in these books – though violence is
mostly off-screen. They'd love to see more CSI-type and legal-
thriller type stories. The stories are 50 percent romance and 50
percent suspense. Both must be fully developed. 55,000 - 60,000 words

As part of Harlequin, Steeple Hill books are available all over the
world in many languages. They're available in both Christian book
stores, grocery stores, mass merchandisers, online, and through book
clubs. They're also available as ebooks.

Turnaround time for unagented, unsolicited manuscripts is
approximately three months. They do not accept complete unsolicited
manuscripts. Query by mail or send the first three chapters and a
synopsis of 5-8 pages. Guidelines are available
http://tinyurl. com/yvaqsua -- or go to http://www.eharlequ in.com and
click on the link to Writer's Guidelines at the bottom of the page.

Chicken Soup for the Stay At Home Mom's Soul
Share Your Favorite Story

What a busy life a Stay At Home Mom leads! She has so many different jobs that it is difficult to keep track of them all: cook, housekeeper, teacher, laundress, facilities manager, chauffeur, psychologist and nurse are just some of the many jobs that she is required to perform. And she is on call twenty four hours a day. Some days she seems to get everything done and feels like a master-performer, and other days, well, she feels like a bumbling clown!

Chicken Soup for the Stay At Home Mom's Soul will share the trials and tribulations, the happiness and laughs, and the heartwarming and touching moments of being a Stay At Home Mom.

Topics will include but not be limited to:

A Mother's Love
Insight and Lessons
On Gratitude
On Sharing and Giving
Through the Eyes of a Child
Overcoming Obstacles
Letting Go
Time for Me

We're looking for inspirational, true stories, 1000 words or less, that will make our readers laugh, cry, or sigh. Stories should be positive, universal and non-controversial. The "point" or "message" should be evident without preaching. No essays, commentaries, tributes, philosophical or biographical pieces will be accepted.

You may submit more than one story, whether original or a favorite from a magazine, newspaper, or other source. For each story selected in the book, a 50-word biography will be included about the author and a permission fee of $200 per story and $50 per poem will be paid. The submission deadline for this title is February 29, 2008.

Please submit your story through our website at www.chickensoup.com. Be sure to select Stay At Home Moms as the book title.

Due to the volume of stories we receive, we are unable to respond to each contribution. Finalist, only, will be notified prior to publication. Please know we never publish anything without written permission from the author.

Essay Contest

Paul Barrow, publisher of WeRtheFuture. com along with HotMedia, has just
formally announced the existence of an essay contest which is set to begin
October 5 and lasts through November 30, 2007. $1,000 will be given to the
winner.

Essays must address one issue: why a peaceful solution to differences such
as those between Middle Eastern theocracies and Western democracies is
possible, why it is a better solution than the armed conflict we now engage
in in Iraq
and Afghanistan, and both how and why America must follow such a peaceful
course in its foreign policy in order to establish useful and productive
relations with Middle Eastern countries. It must also suggest a workable
solution to
American involvement in Iraq.

Contestants should submit their copy to one of the Dennis Kucinich Meetup
Groups on the list of cooperating Groups for judging (the list is available
to
the right in the sidebar on WeRtheFuture. com´s website). They must join the
meetup group (free), log in, and email a copy of the essay to the group
through
the group message system. Each Meetup group will then select from among
those
essays submitted to them the one which best addresses the points described
above. The winning submission in each group will be published on the website
of
WeRtheFuture. com along with similar winning submissions provided by all
other
Dennis Kucinich Meetup Groups. When all submissions are in, Dennis Kucinich
and
his staff will be asked to make a judgment about which essay among the final
winning collection is the best. That winner will be given $1,000 by
WeRtheFuture. com to do with as he or she wishes. The amount of the cash
prize may be
raised as well.

Important: Each submission must be accompanied by a fee of $10. The entry
fee will be made on the WeRtheFuture website via its Paypal link, along with
two
copies of the essay: one copy will be emailed to _essay@WeRtheFuture .com_
(mailto:essay@WeRtheFuture. com) and a
second copy of the essay submission will be submitted simultaneously to the
email address of a participating Meetup Group. This protects the writer with
substantial means of verifying the authenticity of his claim to a prize
should
disputes occur. The final selection of participating groups will be
identified
for WeRtheFuture. com and published on the WeRtheFuture. com website.

Members of each group submitting essays may not participate in the judging
but may participate in discussions about submissions. When all submissions
are
in, net proceeds collected from such submissions will be turned over to the
Dennis Kucinich Campaign. "Net proceeds" means all funds collected minus
the
prize award and a small Paypal transaction fee charged with each payment. If
submissions do not total the full award, the award will be paid anyway by
WeRtheFuture out of its own funds.

The contest will begin October 5, 2007, and the final date for submissions
will be November 30, 2007. Essays submitted must be no more than 600 words.
