Ruth Rendell, 85, creator of British Chief Inspector Wexford mysteries, died this morning in London. She also penned thrillers as Barbara Vine.

Her books championed social consciousness, among them women's causes.

Did they? I have almost every book she wrote. I don't remember her championing any causes. Just using her stories to highlight what she was concerned about. In a similar way to PTerry but as a crime fighter.

Actually her Wexford books weren't her best ones IMO. Her BV books tended to be my favourite. More psychological

It's Rendell, not Rendal

Maybe Ruth Rendal championed women's causes in her books (whoever the hell she is) but it was Ruth Rendell wrote wonderfully articulate village police procedurals and psychological mysteries.

She will be missed.

Thanks, Melville. I spelled from a faulty memory. Of course, you're correct--on more than one level. :)
