Seeking scripts for TV pilot - Deadline Sept. 15, 2008

A new TV Pilot to be filmed - Deadline Sept. 15, 2008

We are about to embark upon a new TV show developed right here in central Florida. It has a working title of "PLAY-Quest" (very likely to change), registered with the WGA-West in Los Angeles (WGA Reg.# 1266332). We will be seeking two groups of new and aspiring professionals: writers (Phase 1), and actors (Phase 2). This is a PHASE 1 search: new writers.

We are seeking scripts for new authors to write new, one-act plays, approximately 7 minutes long, with "G" rated material, to be shown each week on TV with new actors to become a new, "2nd generation reality" TV show. There is no financial compensation for these submissions. Likewise, there are no "fees" for entries. There is the opportunity to be selected and to get full public recognition as the author, to be interviewed "iive" on the TV show, and perhaps even be hired as part of a spin-off series. The criteria and rules for submission are:

1) Submission of either a signed SUBMISSION AGREEMENT (if by mail), or an attached PDF copy of the SUBMISSION AGREEMENT (if sent via email) with full mention in the first line of the email that the attached SUBMISSION AGREEMENT constitutes full agreement to it by the author.
2) All plays must be "original material", which has not been published prior to this submission and competition.
3) Each play when performed must be at least 7 minutes and no longer than 9 minutes.
4) As a "one-act" play, this needs to be a "self-contained story" with a theme, plot, beginning, middle and end so as to tell a "story" and be entertaining to the audience.
5) Plays must be designed for the most simple of theater sets: table, chairs, steps, simple or no backdrops, etc. An excellent example of "simple" is to view tapes of the original "Honeymooners" TV show (Jackie Gleason/Audrey Meadows/Art Carney...) of the 1950's. The entire show took place in a kitchen stage set. Plays must also contain at least 3 acting parts, and no more than 6 acting parts. A "narrator" if brief may also be included to "set the stage" for the play.
6) All submissions must be in the following format:
A) A complete written script on 8.5" x 11" white blank paper with 1" margins all around, double spaced with proper grammatical upper and lower case lettering, Arial or Times New Roman 14 point type, black ink.
B) Each page should contain in a "header":
i.) The type of play (ex: Comedy, Drama, Mystery, Science Fiction, etc.)
ii.) The name of the play
iii.) The page number and total page numbers (ex: "Pg. 1 of 5")
C) Each page should contain in a "footer":
i.) Contact Name & Phone Number
ii.) Contact Email Address
iii.) Date of Submission shown as: MM/DD/YYYY
D) Have a Cover Page that lists all pertinent information including:
i.) Type of Play (Comedy, Drama, etc.)
ii.) Name of Play
iii.) Play Author(s)
iv.) Complete contact information including main contact name, mailing address, telephone number, email address.

7) The Plays must be targeted for "G" (General) rated prime-time TV audience viewing. Violence, sexual content, extreme political or religious views, or other controversial approaches will be disregarded. Think "Cosby Show", "Sesame Street", "Twilight Zone" or "Honeymooners": something anyone in the family regardless of age could watch with minimal chance of being offended. Topics can include virtually anything: family situations, school days, cowboy westerns, science fiction, historical drama, friendship, loving relationships, etc. Just have a creative quality entertaining "story" to tell. We reserve the full right to make these decisions in selecting creative, quality entertainment.

8.) Submissions will NOT be returned (so keep your own copies!). Any plays that are selected for the show will be the property of the show for our airing.

9.) Submissions can be either Email (the preferred method, sent to [email protected]), or by US Mail (to Romagna Company LLC, 300 Sheoah Blvd, #505, Winter Springs, FL, 32708). If by Email, the author must attach 2 documents: 1 - the play script in either Microsoft WORD or PDF file format, and, 2- the SUBMISSION AGREEMENT (obtained from us via email). If by US Mail, both the play script and the SUBMISSION AGREEMENT must be signed, dated and submitted in printed form, single sided. Submissions must be postmarked or sent no later than midnight of September 15th, 2008.

End of instructions.
Gene Romagna / 321-276-6662.

The 2009 PAGE International Screenwriting Awards: $25,000 Grand Prize

Entries are now being accepted in The 2009 PAGE International Screenwriting Awards competition. This year the judges will present over $50,000 in Cash & Prizes, including a huge new $25,000 Grand Prize!

Now in its sixth anniversary year, the PAGE Awards contest continues its track record of success: discovering and promoting some of the most talented new screenwriters from across the country and around the world. Since receiving their prizes, many PAGE Award winners have gone on to land writing assignments, secure representation, and sign option agreements on their winning scripts, and several now have movies in various stages of production and release.

In the latest news:

The Irish adventure-fantasy script FAIRY CHILD, by 2008 Bronze Prize winner Eoin Rogers, is now in development with Cannon Production, Ireland, and NightSky Films, New York. Eoin has also been hired to write an action flick for director Dave Roddham, and he is working on a Celtic fantasy feature for BreakThru Films.

The 2008 PAGE Silver Prize winning drama FIREWORKS, by U.K. scribes Hannah Robinson and Jonathan R. Hall, has been optioned by Concept Entertainment and Hannah is contracted to direct. Hannah and Jonathan are now represented by Frank Wuliger at the Gersh Agency in L.A.

The supernatural thriller GOD SQUAD, by 2008 Bronze Prize winner Stephen Carter, has been optioned by director Matthiew Klinck. Stephen has been signed by Zero Gravity Management.

Sarah Knight of Jo Films has optioned SHADY CREEK, by 2007 Silver Prize winner Russell Gilwee, and the movie is now officially in pre-production. Russell has just been hired to write another script for Jo Films.

As a result of his 2007 PAGE win, Marc Conklin was signed by Beloved Management, and his Gold Prize winning comedy DEADBEAT BOYFRIENDS has now been optioned by L.A. producer James Rich, Jr.

2005 Silver Prize winner Janet Lin is now a staff writer on the FOX TV series “Bones”. Her episode “The Skull in the Sculpture” aired November 5th.

And 2005 Bronze Prize winner Martin McSweeney was recently commissioned to write an episode of “Seacht II” for Sterling TV. The show will air on BBC-TV and TG4 in 2009.

This year, the judges will once again be presenting a total of 31 Awards in ten different genre categories. The winning screenwriters will receive over $50,000 in Cash & Prizes -- including a huge new $25,000 Grand Prize -- as well as extensive publicity and industry exposure for their winning scripts.

Most importantly, the PAGE Awards competition is judged entirely by working professionals in the film and television industry, so all contestants have the opportunity to get their scripts into the hands of Hollywood insiders currently in search of new talent.

Nashville Screenwriters Conference--Hollywood Comes To Nashville!

Hey Everyone,

Just wanted to post this information for anyone in the area... great opportunity to learn from Hollywood's best!

Mark your calendars for the eleventh annual Nashville Screenwriters Conference (NSC). The enormously successful, open-to-the-public conference is set to take place May 29 - 31, 2009 at the historic Union Station hotel in downtown Nashville.NSC will bring Hollywood's top writers, producers, directors, managers, agents and other studio executives to Nashville to provide aspiring screenwriters and individuals interested in worlds of film and TV the opportunity to network, learn and explore the inner-workings of Hollywood.

"Script Magazine" calls NSC "one of the best screenwriters conferences in America." NSC has continued to grow with each passing year and this year's conference will be no exception. The always popular "Music in Film & TV Luncheon" is returning to offer aspiring songwriters, composers and artists an opportunity to learn how to place their music in films and TV. In addition, rather than offering the purchase of sessions in bundles all panels will be available a la carte for purchasing individual tickets in order to accommodate attendees' interests, schedules and budgets.

"Nashville has developed a reputation as a strong creative community and this conference is an exciting way to bring together that community with the creative forces of Hollywood," said Gary Haber, of Haber Corporation and a founder of NSC. "Those in attendance this year can expect an in-depth look at the worlds of film and television with thoughtful reflection on current events and trends in the industry."

Last year's NSC was one of the most exciting yet, bringing some of the writing staff of "Grey's Anatomy," one of television's most popular shows, to Music City. As part of a special, half-day event, screenwriter Larry Wilson ("Beetlejuice" and "The Addams Family") offered "Method to Madness," the world's fastest screenwriting course. Ed Burns, Eric Kocher, David Simon andEvan Wright, the creative forces behind HBO's critically acclaimed "Generation Kill," provided a sneak preview of the series and hosted a rapid-fire Q&A about their show. The conference also featured insight into the Internet and how it is affecting the film and TV business while giving Nashville's creative community face-to-face dialogue with film and television writers.

In its decade-long history, the conference has produced many success stories such as music placement within feature films including "August Rush," optioned screenplays and scriptwriters that have gone on to produce major television miniseries. Previous guests of NSC have included industry leaders from a variety of genres including John August (writer of "Big Fish," "Charlie's Angels" and "Go"), David Self (writer of "Road to Perdition" and "Thirteen Days"), Randall Wallace (writer of "Braveheart" and "Pearl Harbor"), Greg Walker (writer and executive producer of "Without A Trace") and David Hudgins (writer and executive producer of "Friday Night Lights"), as well as executives from New Line Cinema, Miramax Films, Dreamworks, Lionsgate, HBO, TNT, Fox, 821Entertainment, UTA, CAA, William Morris, Variety, Hollywood Reporter, Entertainment Tonight and Access Hollywood.

More details about this year's panels and participants will be announced soon. Tickets go fast! For the latest information or to get tickets, visit www.nashscreen.com.

ABOUT THE NASHVILLE SCREENWRITERS CONFERENCE:

Founded in 1999, Nashville Screenwriters Conference was inspired and created by the multi-talented Karen Murphy (producer of "For Your Consideration," "A Mighty Wind," "Best in Show," "Waiting for Guffman" and "This is Spinal Tap"), Les Bohem (writer/executive producer of "Taken," "Dante's Peak" and "Daylight"), as well as business manager and Nashville businessman, Gary Haber of Haber Corporation. The Nashville Screenwriters Conference is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization.

You’re an Idiot: Making Value from Reaction to your Screenwriting

 You’re an Idiot: Making Value from Reaction to your Screenwriting
By Gordy Hoffman

If you’re like me, if someone doesn’t like something about my screenplay, my very first reaction is always the same.

You’re not as smart as me. If you knew what I knew, you would understand what I wrote. And you don’t understand what I wrote, because you don’t know as much as I do. About everything, in general. In short, life. You know, people. Planet Earth.

If you really don’t understand what I’m doing in my script, my first feeling is I don’t respect you. I have contempt for you. I feel attacked personally, and with my feelings hurt, I want to denigrate your position, and while I won’t call you an idiot, basically the foundation of my exchange with you in the wake of you reading my script is you are, in fact, some kind of idiot.

For the rest of the article and to read more by Gordy on screenwriting, visit www.bluecatscreenplay.com/news/advice.php.

About the Author
Winner of the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award at the Sundance Film Festival for LOVE LIZA, Gordy Hoffman has written and directed three digital shorts for Fox Searchlight. He made his feature directorial debut with his script, A COAT OF SNOW, which world premiered at the 2005 Locarno Intl Film Festival. He is the founder of the BlueCat Screenplay Competition. Dedicated to develop and celebrate the undiscovered screenwriter, BlueCat provides written script analysis on every script entered. In addition, Gordy acts as a script consultant for screenwriters, offering personalized feedback on their scripts through his consultation service, www.screenplaynotes.com.

Just wanted to invite all of the new writers out to my Screenwriting 101 blog at http://gophergrrrl.blogspot.com/ . I enjoy helping new writers, so I created this blog to concide with the beta reading that I do.

So, if you're just starting out and need some assistance, stop by. Leave some comments or questions, I'll do my best to assist! :)

My Screenplay entitled "Furry Wars"

I made my screenplay available online for anyone who wants to read it. I'm open for criticisms, praise, suggestions, disparaging remarks, etc. Hopefully, someone has time and interest, so they can reply with some feedback.

I've semi'd bluecat and placed as a finalist in xtreme screenwriting competition. I've also created a thread in share your work, so admins can delete this one if it violates TOS or something of that nature.
