Cliches have been covered, mostly. The problem with including dwarves, elves, goblin, or dragons in your novel is that there is so much that goes with those names. From Tolkien to D&D to Warhammer to whatever, it's hard to escape their past.
However, plenty of people love that heritage and if I ever decided to write something about dwarves - I have never liked elves - I imagine I would embrace that. A cliched dragon can still be brilliant if the prose is up to scratch.
