As I Sat Sadly By Her Side
by Nick Cave

(c) Nick Cave

As I sat sadly by her side
At the window, through the glass
She stroked a kitten in her lap
And we watched the world as it fell past
Softly she spoke these words to me
And with brand new eyes, open wide
We pressed our faces to the glass
As I sat sadly by her side

She said, "Father, mother, sister, brother,
Uncle, aunt, nephew, niece,
Soldier, sailor, physician, labourer,
Actor, scientist, mechanic, priest
Earth and moon and sun and stars
Planets and comets with tails blazing
All are there forever falling
Falling lovely and amazing"

Then she smiled and turned to me
And waited for me to reply
Her hair was falling down her shoulders
As I sat sadly by her side

As I sat sadly by her side
The kitten she did gently pass
Over to me and again we pressed
Our different faces to the glass
"That may be very well", I said
"But watch the one falling in the street
See him gesture to his neighbours
See him trampled beneath their feet
All outward motion connects to nothing
For each is concerned with their immediate need
Witness the man reaching up from the gutter
See the other one stumbling on who can not see"

With trembling hand I turned toward her
And pushed the hair out of her eyes
The kitten jumped back to her lap
As I sat sadly by her side

Then she drew the curtains down
And said, "When will you ever learn
That what happens there beyond the glass
Is simply none of your concern?
God has given you but one heart
You are not a home for the hearts of your brothers

And God does not care for your benevolence
Anymore than he cares for the lack of it in others
Nor does he care for you to sit
At windows in judgement of the world He created
While sorrows pile up around you
Ugly, useless and over-inflated"

At which she turned her head away
Great tears leaping from her eyes
I could not wipe the smile from my face
As I sat sadly by her side

Hmm... last one was Blind Melon's "No Rain," because it was playing in the drugstore.

The last one that affected me deeply was one I hadn't heard in nine years (it popped up on my iPod). By a little-known Florida band called For Squirrels, part of the 1990s power-pop surge. The song, "Mighty KC" is catchy, and in some ways, it's a bit cheesy; it's about Kurt Cobain, and it's melodramatic, not particularly poetic, but here's the weird part:

The kids - they were 21 and 22 at the time - in the band had just signed their major label deal and were driving their van back to Florida when a tire blew out, they crashed, and all but two of the band members were killed.

Now read the lyrics:

She lies in a bedpan with her name scrawled on her back
It sure sounds funny when you say his name like that
He lies in an empty room with his hair burnt to the back
It sure sounds funny when you say his name like that

Ship me off to the morgue
I'm ready to be buried alone way down in my bed
And I'm alone without the sun
Send me off to the morgue
I'm ready to be buried away down in my bed
And I'm alone without the sun
Please just take one

And by the grace of god go I into the great unknown
Thing are gonna change in our favor
And if we gather, if we fall over the great unknown
Things are gonna change in our favor

100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600 Oh they're found dead, dead
And I am numb from watching TV
100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600 Oh they're just there, there
And I am numb from watching TV
Please don't break me

And by the grace of god go I into the great unknown
Things are gonna change in our favor
And if we gather, if we fall over the great unknown
Things are gonna change in our favor
***

The song wound up being this eerily uptempo, yet minor-chord foreshadowing of the singer's own death.

I interviewed the two survivors a few months later; they were trying to keep the band alive, but the lead singer, who had died, was really the cornerstone of the whole thing.

Don't know if this makes sense without knowing the song, but I wound up crying when I was listening to it. I've interviewed a few musicians who later killed themselves (no correlation... I hope) and met many more casually, and hearing their music puts me in this melancholy headspace, even if the songs are power-pop, like Charlatans or Lush. Which takes me back to "No Rain" and the Blind Melon guy who ODed. The perkier the song, the more depressed I get remembering them.

Listened to Jeff Buckley's "The Sky Is A Landfill" earlier...

Circle around the park
Joining hands in silence
Watch the evil black the sky

The storm has ripped the shelter
Of illusion from our brow
This power is no mystery to us now.

Leave your spirit genocide
The cancer you won’t remove
We cast our funeral rose inside
And bury the need to prove
Our mutilation is to gain from the system

Ooh, turn your head away
From the screen, oh people
It will tell you nothing more
Don’t suck the milk of flaccid Bill K.
Public’s empty promise
To the people that the public can ignore

This way of life is so devised
To snuff out the mind that moves
Moving with grace the men despise
And women have learned to lose

Throw off your shame or be
a slave to the system

I see you take another drag
One more lost soul to raise your flag
The sky is a landfill
I see you take another drag
Let’s see you take another drag

You like to dance to the rolling
Head of the adulteress
You sing in praise of suicide
We know you’re useless
Like cops at the scene of the crime

With your steroids and your feedbag
And your stable and your trainer
I got a mail bomb for you Mister Strong Arm.

Throw out the stones from all the cemetery homes
For the violence of a nation gone by

Or the politics of weakness
And the garbage dump of souls
That will now black the sky

Their yellow haze and crowds of eyes
Will plug up the mind that moves
Moving with grace the men despise
And women have learned to lose
We’ll share our bodies
In disdain for the system

Oh, I see you take another drag
One nation bends to kiss the hag
The sky is a landfill
I see you take another drag
I see you take another drag
I have no fear of this machine!

Living my Life in slow hell
different girl every night at the hotel
I ain't seen the sunshine in three damn days
Fueling up on cocaine and whiskey
Wish I had a good girl to miss me
Lord I wonder if I'll ever change my ways

I put your picture away
Sat down and cried today
I can't look at you while I'm lying next to her

I put your picture away
Sat down and cried today
I can't look at you while I'm lying next to her

I called you last night in the hotel
Everyone knows but they won't tell
But there half hearted smiles tell me something just ain't right
I've been waiting on you for a long time
Fueling up on heartaches and cheap wine
I ain't heard from you in three damn nights

I put your picture away
I wondered where you been
I can't look at you while I'm lying next to him

I put your picture away
I wondered where you been
I can't look at you while I'm lying next to him

I saw you yesterday with a old friend
It was the same ol same my with my review been
Since you been gone my worlds been dark and grey

You reminding me of brighter days
I hope you were coming home to stay

I was head of the Church
I was off to drink you away

I thought about you for a long time
Can't seem to get you off my mind
I can't stand why where living life this way

I found your picture today
I swear I'll change my ways
I just called to say I want you to come back home

I found your picture today
I swear I'll change my ways
I just called to say I want you to come back home

I just called to say I love you come back home

We might kiss when we are alone
When nobody's watching
I might take you home
We might make out when nobody's there
It's not that we're scared
It's just that it's delicate

So why do you fill my sorrow
With the words you've borrowed
From the only place (that) you've known
And why do you sing Hallelujah
If it means nothing to you
Why do you sing with me at all?

We might live like never before
When there's nothing to give
Well how can we ask for more
We might make love in some sacred place
The look on your face is delicate

So why do you fill my sorrow
With the words you've borrowed
From the only place (that) you've known
And why do you sing Hallelujah
If it means nothing to you
Why do you sing with me at all?

So why do you fill my sorrow
With the words you've borrowed
From the only place (that) you've known
And why do you sing Hallelujah
If it means nothing to you
Why do you sing with me at all?

Here's two more I have queued up, in case anyone wants to download them if they've never heard of this guy...they're really good songs.

Trust me.

These are both by a fellow named Teitur.

"You're The Ocean"

There's too much sky, not enough blue
There's too many questions to why I love you
There's too many clouds, not enough sun
The rain must fall on everyone

I'm fire-you're the ocean
I'm energy-you're the rhythm
Love is somewhere in between
What you believe and what you dream
I'm just trying to make you mine
You're the ocean

There's too much doubt and not enough dare
There's too much decision everywhere
There's too much talk and not enough time
Let's close our eyes and not our minds

I'm fire-you're the ocean
I'm energy-you're the rhythm
Love is somewhere in between
What you believe and what you dream
I'm just trying to make you mine

You look for leads, I follow clues
You love to win, I dare to lose
Mostly you're a mind game in my head

You are earth, I am water
I can give you what you're after
You can be the word:I can be the rhyme:
There's really nothing you can do
You're going where I'm going too
Stay beside me, stay beside me
I want you

I'm fire-you're the ocean
I'm energy-you're the rhythm
Love is somewhere in between
What you believe and what you dream
I'm just trying to make you mine
You're the ocean

Another good one by him is...

"I Was Just Thinking"

I was just thinking
that I have been missing you for way too long
There's something inside this weary head
that wants us to love just instead
But I was just thinking, merely thinking

I've got loads of pictures
I've got the one of you in that dancing dress
But man I feel silly in that dim light
Just after doing you by the sight of My Kodak delights
I am sinking, merely sinking

I think about long distance rates
instead of kissing you babe
I'm a singer without a song
If I wait for you longer
my affection is stronger,
I was just thinking, merely thinking
That this boat is sinking

I'm tired of postcards,
especially the ones with cute dogs and cupids
I'm tired of calling you,
missing you,
dreaming I've slept with you
Don't get me wrong I still desperately love you

Inside this weary head I just want us to love instead
But I was just thinking and thinking,
merely thinking

I think about long distance rates
instead of kissing you babe
And time is running me still
If I wait for you longer
my affection is stronger

I was just thinking - I was just thinking
That I'm tired of calling you once a week
And thinking of long distance rates
instead of kissing you
Baby, I'm sinking

Go download them.

You, too, Haskins.

Moonlight Drive by The Doors

Let's swim to the moon, uh huh
Let's climb through the tide
Penetrate the evenin' that the
City sleeps to hide
Let's swim out tonight, love
It's our turn to try
Parked beside the ocean
On our moonlight drive
Let's swim to the moon, uh huh
Let's climb through the tide
Surrender to the waiting worlds
That lap against our side
Nothin' left open
And no time to decide
We've stepped into a river
On our moonlight drive
Let's swim to the moon
Let's climb through the tide
You reach your hand to hold me
But I can't be your guide
Easy, I love you
As I watch you glide
Falling through wet forests
On our moonlight drive, baby
Moonlight drive
Come on, baby, gonna take a little ride
Down, down by the ocean side
Gonna get real close
Get real tight
Baby gonna drown tonight
Goin' down, down, down

Take You Back

Wurdwise, I love the song "Picture."

Here's the last song I heard today coming home from work. Listening to Christian Rock countdown, this is #1 last two weeks.

Take You Back/Jeremy CampThe reason why I stand
The answer lies in you
You hung to make me strong
Though my praise was few
When I fall and bring your name down

But I have found in you
A heart that pleads forgiveness
Replacing all these thoughts
Of painful memories
But I know
That your response will always be

(Chorus)
I'll take you back always
And even when your fight is over now
Even when your fight is over now
I'll take you back always
And even when the pain is coming through
Even when the pain is coming through
I'll take you back

You satisfy this cry
Of what I'm looking for
And I take all I can
And lay it down
Before the throne of endless grace, now
That radiates what's true

I'm in the only place
That erases all these faults
That have overtaken me
But I know
That your response will always be

(Repeat Chorus)

I can only speak
With a grateful heart
As I'm pieced by this gift
Of your love

I will always bring an offering
I can never thank you enough

(Chorus Two)
You'll take me back always
And even when my fight is over now
Even when my fight is over now
You'll take me back always
And even when my pain is coming through
Even when my pain is coming through
You'll take me back always

Even when my fight is over now
Even when my fight is over now

You'll take me back always

Even when my pain is coming through
Even when my pain is coming through

You'll take me back

The Ghost Song -- Jim Morrison

Shake dreams from your hair
My pretty child, my sweet one.
Choose the day and choose the sign of your day
The day's divinity
First thing you see.

A vast radiant beach in a cool jeweled moon
Couples naked race down by it's quiet side
And we laugh like soft, mad children
Smug in the wooly cotton brains of infancy
The music and voices are all around us.

The Crystal Ship

Before you slip into unconsciousness
I'd like to have another kiss
Another flashing chance at bliss
Another kiss, another kiss
The days are bright and filled with pain
Enclose me in your gentle rain
The time you ran was too insane
We'll meet again, we'll meet again
Oh tell me where your freedom lies
The streets are fields that never die
Deliver me from reasons why
You'd rather cry, I'd rather fly
The crystal ship is being filled
A thousand girls, a thousand thrills
A million ways to spend your time
When we get back, I'll drop a line

Ahh...The Lizard King. What a poet...

Water to the Moon

One of my favourite songs. Inspired by To Kill a Mockingbird. Galoot and other BC-ers, take note. This is one of your own:

Water to the Moon

Every single rock turned over is uncovering my doubt,
I am on the inside wanting out
If I left here yesterday it wouldn't be too soon
But I am drawn to her

Like water to the moon, like water to the moon

If a picture paints a thousand words
Well then she's a thousand pictures
I would kick and fight, howl all night
Just for one look at her scriptures
Her majesty is her poetry
Her words could leave a man in ruin
And I am drawn to her

Like water to the moon, like water to the moon

All the pushing and the pulling
All the come here go away
All the stories, no, their telling
I'm the one who has to pay

Once a chef, once a gangster
Now she is an actress
Yes she borrows and she begs
Says if you want to make an omlette in Hollywood
You've got to break a few legs
If she ever sang of love to me
It would surely be out of tune
But I am drawn to her

Like water to the moon
Like water to the moon
Like water to the moon
Like water to the moon

Northern Sky -- Nick Drake

I never felt magic crazy as this
I never saw moons knew the meaning of the sea
I never held emotion in the palm of my hand
Or felt sweet breezes in the top of a tree
But now you're here
Brighten my northern sky.

I've been a long time that i'm waiting
Been a long that i'm blown
I've been a long time that i've wandered
Through the people i have known
Oh, if you would and you could
Straighten my new mind's eye.

Would you love me for my money
Would you love me for my head
Would you love me through the winter
Would you love me 'til i'm dead
Oh, if you would and you could
Come blow your horn on high.

I never felt magic crazy as this
I never saw moons knew the meaning of the sea
I never held emotion in the palm of my hand
Or felt sweet breezes in the top of a tree
But now you're here
Brighten my northern sky.

"Scars" - Papa Roach

I tear my heart open, I sew myself shut
My weakness is that I care too much
And my scars remind me that the past is real
I tear my heart open just to feel

I'm Drunk and I'm feeling down
And I just wanna be alone
I'm pissed 'cause you came around
Why don't you just go home?
'Cause I channeled all your pain
And I can't help you fix yourself
You're making me insane
All I can say is...

[Chorus:]
I tear my heart open, I sew myself shut
And my weakness is that I care too much
And our scars remind us that the past is real
I tear my heart open just to feel

I tried to help you once
Against my own advice
I saw you going down
But you never realized
That you're drowning in the water
So I offered you my hand
Compassion's in my nature
Tonight is our last stand

[Chorus]

I'm drunk and I'm feeling down
And I just wanna be alone
You shoulda' never come around
Why don't you just go home?
'Cause you're drowning in the water
And I tried to grab your hand
I left my heart open
But you didn't understand
But you didn't understand

Go fix yourself

I can't help you fix yourself
But at least I can say I tried
I'm sorry but I gotta move on with my own life
I can't help you fix yourself
But at least I can say I tried
I'm sorry but I gotta move on with my own life

[Chorus x2]

Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd

So, so you think you can tell
Heaven from Hell,
Blue skies from pain.
Can you tell a green field
From a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?

Did they get you to trade
Your heroes for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
And did you exchange
A walk on part in a war
For a lead role in a cage?

How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls
Swimming in a fish bowl,
Year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
What have we found?
The same old fears.
Wish you were here.

Eye of the Hurricane (David Wilcox)

The tank is full, the switch is on
The night is warm, the cops are gone
The rocket-bike is all her own
It's called a Hurricane

She told me once it's quite a ride
It's shaped so there's this place inside
Where if you're moving, you can hide
Safe within the rain

{Refrain}
She wants to run away
But there's no where that she can go
Nowhere the pain won't come again
But she can hide
Hide in the pouring rain
She rides the eye of a Hurricane

Tell the truth, explain to me
How you got this need for speed
She laughed and said
"It might just be the next best thing to love"

Hope is gone, and she confessed
That when you lay your dream to rest
You can get what's second best
But it's hard to get enough

{Refrain}

We saw her ride, so fast last night
Racing by in a flash of light

Riding quick the street was dark
The shining truck she thought was parked
It blocked her path, stopped her heart
But not the Hurricane

She saw her chance to slip the trap
There was just the room to pass in back
But then it moved, closed the gap
She never felt the pain

(Refrain)

Comfortably Numb -- Pink Floyd

Hello.
Is there anybody in there?
Just nod if you can hear me.
Is there anyone home?

Come on, now.
I hear you’re feeling down.
Well I can ease your pain,
Get you on your feet again.

Relax.
I need some information first.
Just the basic facts:
Can you show me where it hurts?

There is no pain, you are receding.
A distant ship’s smoke on the horizon.
You are only coming through in waves.
Your lips move but I can’t hear what you’re sayin’.
When I was a child I had a fever.
My hands felt just like two balloons.
Now I got that feeling once again.
I can’t explain, you would not understand.
This is not how I am.
I have become comfortably numb.

Ok.
Just a little pinprick. [ping]
There’ll be no more --aaaaaahhhhh!
But you may feel a little sick.

Can you stand up?
I do believe it’s working. good.
That’ll keep you going for the show.
Come on it’s time to go.

There is no pain, you are receding.
A distant ship’s smoke on the horizon.
You are only coming through in waves.
Your lips move but I can’t hear what you’re sayin’.
When I was a child I caught a fleeting glimpse,
Out of the corner of my eye.
I turned to look but it was gone.
I cannot put my finger on it now.
The child is grown, the dream is gone.
I have become comfortably numb.

My kids, who are little and should be in bed, are listening to the B-52s "Deadbeat Club." They're choreographing a dance to it.

I can't impose bedtime in the middle of that! Luckily their dad is less romantic. All's quiet now.

Actually, I don't own a Pink Floyd album at all (yet). I just tend to have a few songs on repeat that mean something to me at the time. These two happen to be among them.

Oh! You must buy one. Pink Floyd is some very powerful music. It sucks ya right in. I was never much of a Pink Floyd fan until I started dating this guy years ago. He turned me on to them and I've loved Pink Floyd ever since. I would suggest The Wall or Dark Side of the Moon. There are so many great ones. But for starters, those two are excellent!

People Are Strange - The Doors

People are strange when you're a stranger
Faces look ugly when you're alone
Women seem wicked when you're unwanted
Streets are uneven when you're down
When you're strange
Faces come out of the rain
When you're strange
No one remembers your name
When you're strange X3
