I would fall over in a fit of giggly-squee if someone wrote *good* fan fic of my stuff. Bad fan fic is of course the stuff of nightmares, and akin to my bad dreams of everyone hating and mocking my work. But - good or bad - I probably won't ever be able to admit that I read it. I don't know how Naomi Novik manages it; the legal issues alone would keep me wistfully silent.

. I've seen fan communities built around bashing a particular character, and it just seems like a waste of time and energy to me. If you hate a character, why would you want to devote so much energy to bashing them?

Tell me about it. One of my fandoms has been in meltdown for months over it - divided into those who hate, those who love and those of us who think everyone just needs to grow the hell up.
