Let's say I got a graphic novel published, and I decide to write a prose novel which is a prequel to the graphic novel. Can that be allow by your publishers, or you have to get their permission to do it.

Most publishers will have a contract with anyone they publish. Matters like this are usually spelled out there. Generally you cant take an idea elsewhere while the contract is still in effect. In some cases you can, but you have to give your current publisher the right of first refusal. Meaning you have to pitch the other project to them first, and only if they pass on it can you take it elsewhere.

So I could be stuck with them unless I do a different project for another publisher, which isn't based on my graphic novel.

Pretty much, yeah. Once someone agrees to publish your idea they pretty much get the exclusive rights to it and the rights to any possible spin offs or sequels. Assuming theres a contract where this is spelled out. If theres no contract then there are no rules.

What about comic book magazines, like Heavy Metal.
