The Wild Rose Press Announces the Easter Lilies Short Story Contest,
sponsored by the White Rose inspirational line. We invite you to
enter for your chance to win one of three publication slots.

Rules for Entry:
The defining Scripture is Solomon 2:2 "Like a lily among thorns is my
darling among the maidens."

Stories should be between 5,000 and 10,000 words. Authors may enter
more than one story, but each should be original and never-before-
published. Current TWRP authors are eligible to enter.

You may incorporate both the hero's and heroine's points of view,
however, as the Scripture is a man speaking of his lady, ideally,
these stories should focus on your hero's love developing for his
heroine. These stories may be historical or contemporary, but they
must be set around the Easter holiday.

In addition to using this Scripture as the reference, some symbol of
the Easter Lily must also be incorporated. Easter lilies have long
been a symbol of purity, motherhood, the trumpet herald of the Angel
Gabriel as he visited the Virgin Mary, of resurrection, and more.
(Feel free to research and use different symbols. These are listed as
example only).

How you incorporate any of the symbols is up to you. Whether it's an
actual flower that the hero gives to the heroine (or vice versa), or
a piece of jewelry, or a spiritual experience. The use is up to you.
Perhaps your hero is a Christian musician who plays the trumpet.
Perhaps your heroine has lily earrings that have been passed through
her family. Perhaps your hero had a "resurrection" of his faith
through some experience past or present, or maybe your heroine is a
mother. How you incorporate the Easter lily symbolism is up to you.
It can be subtle or overt, but it has to be there.

Three stories will be chosen, and winners will receive a publishing
contract from The Wild Rose Press. Stories will be released in
electronic format one per day on the three days preceding Easter 2009.

Entries must be received via email on or before July 1, 2008. Winners
will be announced no later than October 3, 2008.

The subject line of all entries must read: TWRP Easter Lilies: [title
of entry] [last name of author]
Entries that do not have this subject line will be disqualified and
deleted.

In the body of the email include:
Title:
Author Name (and pseudonym, if applicable):
One-word description of symbolism used:
(eg. "trumpet" "resurrection" "purity" "herald")

Your story should be typed in standard manuscript format and be
attached to your entry email as a Word .doc or .rtf file.
Entitle your entry file: TWRP_EL_[name of story]
Send entries to: NMartinez@thewildro sepress.. com

You will receive a receipt confirmation email in return

Plain Truth Online (Pays: $.15-.25/word)

"Plain Truth proclaims authentic Christianity without the religion. We center our teaching on Jesus Christ and God’s amazing grace. We give hope to those burned out by religious legalism. We point out religious devices and detours that lead away from God as we seek to reach those who have given up on him.

"Readership of the PT is approximately 100,000 in the United States and Canada. Our average reader is 55 years of age. The female-male ratio is 52-48.

may do so at www.ptm.org). Discover the style and flavor of articles we print."

Reader's Eden is proud to announce that our monthly newsletter is being
ramped up into an actual ezine.

Our new editor is Sean MacLachlan, who has kindly put together this
call for submissions. ..

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

Reader's Eden Ezine is now open to short stories of up to 8,000 words
in all genres except erotica. We are also looking for cover art..
Please read the submission guidelines carefully.

ABOUT US:

Reader's Eden Ezine is a free electronic publication coming out at the
beginning of every month from Reader's Eden (www.readerseden. com),
distributor of some of the best electronic and small press publications
available. It developed from the Reader's Eden newsletter, expanded to
include not only the old newsletter's author interviews, but also a
regular editorial and up to three short stories every month. For back
issues of the old Reader's Eden newsletter, go to
http://www.readerse den.com/pages. php?pageid= 10.

Subscription is free. Go to www.readerseden. com and on the left column
you will be a place to enter your email. Your email address will not be
sold. Back issues will be available on the website.

WHAT WE WANT:

Short stories up to 8,000 words. Flash fiction is also accepted.

Each issue is either a themed issue or an open theme. All genres are
accepted for both. For information on the themed issues, see below.

We will also consider well-researched nonfiction articles on the state
of electronic and/or small press publishing, or the state of any
specific genre or subgenre. We are not interested in how-to-write
articles or news briefs. These are already well covered in many other
publications.

Reprints of previously published stories and articles are welcome as
long as you own the rights. Please inform us if it is a reprint.

We are looking for stories that break out of genre stereotypes. Too
many stories today, especially from the big publishing houses, use the
same old ingredients over and over again. For more on my ideas of the
role of the small and electronic press, and for insights on how to get
a story past me, read my essay here:

http://midlistwrite r.blogspot. com/2008/ 05/which- way-for-electron ic-press. html

We will be accepting one work of art for the cover for each issue. Any
medium, style, or subject is fine as long as it's something you
wouldn't mind your teenager seeing. Art must be sent in .jpg format.

WHAT WE DON'T WANT:

Erotica, explicit sex scenes (PG rated, please), fan fiction, and
gratuitous gore. We are also not considering poetry, screenplays, or
memoir.

HOW WE WANT IT:

Send all stories, articles, and artwork to Sean McLachlan, editor of
Reader's Eden Ezine: readersedenezine (at) yahoo.co.uk I have another
email address on my personal blogs and website, but the above address
is for the ezine. Please do not send emails related to the ezine to my
other account.

All submissions should be sent in the text of the email. EMAILS WITH
ATTACHMENTS WILL BE DELETED UNREAD. On the subject line, put either
"OPEN THEME: your story title" or "THEME NAME: your story title." Note
that cutting and pasting text into the body of an email often destroys
the paragraphs. Don't worry about indentation, but make sure there's a
space between each paragraph. If we want the story, we'll ask you then
and only then to send it as an attachment. You may send artwork as an
attachment.

Please do a thorough copyedit of your story before submission. It helps
to have several people look at it. Please mark your scene breaks.
Include a brief bio along with links to your website or blog.

COMPENSATION:

Since we are just starting out we are not able to pay contributors at
this time. I know you deserve better and I apologize. However, there
will be a reader's poll every issue and the story, article, or artwork
that is voted the favorite will earn the creator a $10 gift certificate
to Reader's Eden. The prizes will increase as we grow, and we plan to
eventually pay all our contributors.

Reader's Eden Ezine asks for 12 months nonexclusive electronic rights,
meaning that once it's up, you are free to sell it elsewhere. After 12
months, you may request to have it removed from the website.

PUBLISHING SCHEDULE AND THEMED ISSUES:

June 2008: open theme. Deadline: closed.

July 2008: open theme. Deadline: June 1.

August 2008: Theme: "Adventurous Journeys". Write a story set on
modern-day Earth, but in a country not usually covered in fiction. No
stories set in North America (including Mexico), Western Europe, or any
English-speaking country. Stories should give us the feel of what it's
like to be in that place. Alternate versions of real countries are
acceptable for fantasy and science fiction stories. Now's the chance to
turn that exotic vacation into a story! Deadline: July 1.

September 2008: open theme. Deadline: August 1.

October 2008: Theme: "Forgotten Histories". Write a story set in a
historical period usually overlooked in fiction. No stories set in
ancient Rome, Greece, medieval or Renaissance Western Europe,
Elizabethan/ Regency/Victoria n England, colonial America, the Wild West,
the American Civil War, World War II, or the Vietnam War. Historical
accuracy is important, but feel free to throw in fantastic or science
fictional elements Deadline: September 1.

November 2008: open theme. Deadline: October 1.

December 2008: Theme: "Hometown Heroics". Set a story in your hometown.
Stories should give us a feel for what it's like to live in that town,
city, or region. Historical stories accepted. Once again, feel free to
throw in fantastic or science fictional elements, but the town must
remain recognizable. Deadline: November 1.

From: Love Lessons, James S. Bell To: [email protected] Sent: Monday, June 23, 2008 6:27 PMSubject: New Writing Project with Dr. Gary Chapman

Dear Writer,

Would you like to be part of an exciting writing venture with Dr. Gary Chapman, best-selling author of The Five Love Languages? Dr. Chapman and I are pulling together a new book and we’d like to invite you to be a part of it.You may be familiar with me as the editor of the Christian segment of A Cup of Comfort series of inspirational stories published by Adams Media. Or you may connect me with the Life Savors series published by Tyndale House. Whether you’re one of the wonderful writers who has inspired and encouraged others through these compilations, or whether you’re new to my projects, I’d like to hear your story.A number of Dr. Chapman’s books have dealt with the theme of love in relationships – not only how to effectively communicate love but also learning to become a loving person. Now Dr. Chapman would like to give others an opportunity to share the lessons they’ve learned on their love journeys. We are compiling a collection of these stories in a volume entitled, Love Lessons: Everyday Acts of Love That Change Lives, which Bethany House will publish in Spring, 2009. We will accept 40-50 stories at 1,200 to 2,000 words each. The stories should demonstrate a progression in your learning to love authentically and how you learned to become a more loving person. Most of the stories should focus on growth in relationships, including: married couples, family members, parenting, friendships, and work relationships. But they may also relate to a neighbor, or even a homeless person. The story should include descriptive character development, especially related to the soul; how emotions, perspective, and quality of life changed based on the interactions between people. We prefer stories to be in first person, based on your personal experience of growth. But “as-told-to” stories will be considered. These stories do not have to include God in them and, if they do, God should not be the focus. We will be appealing to both the Christian and secular markets with the message of how to love others from a human perspective, so please eliminate Christian jargon. If your story is selected you will receive a one-time fee of $100 upon publication. We would like to receive all submissions by August 31, but would hope that most will be in by the beginning of that month. We will also judge what we consider to be the three best stories – with awards of $500, $300, and $200, respectively. The selection and editorial process will take a considerable amount of time and we will not be able to let you know if your story is chosen until mid November, so we ask for your patience. We will let you know as soon as we know. Also, include all relevant contact information on the actual manuscript, which may be attached in an email: names, full address, email address, social security number and phone number, and brief bio. Your social security number can be received by regular mail if you prefer, but it will only be used for payment purposes. Please address all queries and manuscripts to my associate, Jeanette Littleton, at [email protected]. Please feel free to pass this letter along to others you think might be interested in submitting to this book. Thank you so much for considering participating in this exciting and groundbreaking project.

Blessings to you and yours,

James Stuart BellEditor for Dr. Gary Chapman

Thanks to Robin Lee Hatcher for this one!

The creative force behind WhereTheMapEnds.com, one of the Web’s premier sources of interviews and content related to Christian fantasy and science fiction, is pleased to announce the creation of a new independent publishing company, Marcher Lord Press.

Marcher Lord Press immediately becomes the leading indie publisher of Christian speculative fiction.

The Marcher Lord Press Web site (www.marcherlordpress.com) went live on October 1, 2007, and the company’s first original novels will release on October 1, 2008.

After more than 13 years working in the Christian publishing industry as a published novelist and professional editor on staff with three Christian publishing companies, Marcher Lord Press founder Jeff Gerke has created his own publishing venture to specialize in the kind of Christian fiction he says is lacking in the current marketplace.

“I’ve always loved Christian speculative fiction,” Gerke says. “Christian fantasy, science fiction, time travel, supernatural thrillers, the works. My own first novels were near-future technothrillers. But I was always frustrated that these novels seemed to get short shrift in the industry. So I decided to do something about it.”

The first lineup of Marcher Lord Press titles includes Hero, Second Class, a comic fantasy in the tradition of Monty Python and the Holy Grail, by first-time novelist Mitchell Bonds; The Personifid Invasion, a futuristic spiritual warfare thriller by R. E. Bartlett; and Summa Elvetica by Theodore Beale, an exploration of what would happen if something very much like the Catholic church existed in a fantasy world and decided to explore whether or not elves have souls.

Going forward, Marcher Lord Press will release six original novels a year in two release cycles: April and October. Marcher Lord Press will then begin augmenting its original releases with the re-release of Christian speculative novels that have gone out of print—all with new covers and bonus content like lost chapters or original short stories by the author.

“I’m shooting for a specific readership,” Gerke says. “I like to call them ‘Christian who love Battlestar Galactica’ or ‘Christians who love Heroes’ or—my favorite—‘Christians who would go to Comic-CON if given the chance.’ I want to give them the kind of fiction that is currently all but absent in today’s publishing climate.”

Regret to inform y'all that ByGrace Publishing is folding. They won't pub anything new but will continue to sell previous releases through December '09.

I hate to see this happen but the economy is...well, as it is. They are a nice bunch of people and I wish them Godspeed in any new endeavor they undertake.

Christmas Miracles is a book project we have contracted with St. Martin's Press for late 2009 release. We seek true stories of miracles that took place at Christmas. They must revolve around that special time of year.

We prefer first-person narratives.

This is an excellent opportunity to see your writing in a book with other outstanding authors.

You must follow these guidelines:

• Deadline for stories is December 24, 2008.
• All entries must be double-spaced, 12-point font, Times New Roman, Word document.
• Stories may run from 900 to 1,300 words. We will not consider longer pieces.
• We will edit all stories we accept so that they have a unified voice.
• Your name will be listed with your story and you'll have a four-line information/resume paragraph at the end of the book.
• Every story must have a positive solution that results from a miracle through events or timing at the Christmas season.
• Every story must have a positive application. That is, you must tell us what you learned from that miracle or how it changed your life.
• You may send an original or a reprint. (If a reprint, please tell us where it was published and assure us that you own the reprint rights.)

If we accept your story, you will retain rights. You'll also receive a $50 honorarium and a free copy of the book when it is released in October 2009.

Chicken Soup for the Soul: Tough Times, Tough People
101 Stories about Overcoming the Economic Crisis and Other Challenges

Most of us have lost money and many are losing their jobs, homes, or at least making cutbacks. Many of us have also faced life-changing natural disasters such as hurricanes and fires, as well as health and family challenges. We are all going through difficult times, some with more dire consequences than others.

Tough times won't last but tough people will. What is your story of tough times? Are you making changes in your life that reflect the times? Are you downsizing, making do with less, discovering new joy in a simpler life? Are you recovering from other challenges such as natural disasters, health problems, or the loss of a loved one?

We are looking for true stories and poems written in the first person of no more than 1,200 words. Stories can be serious or humorous, or both.

Here are some suggested topics, but we know you can think of many more:

Financial problems and solutions
Losing homes and jobs
Putting off retirement
Silver linings
Downsizing, simplification, "staycations" versus vacations
Families pulling together
Challenges of death, disease, and disability
Stories of courage from victims of crime, terrorism, and other abuses
Recovering from disasters such as fire, hurricanes, floods
Inspirational stories of overcoming obstacles and challenges
Putting things in perspective
Examples from nature - pets and other animals overcoming adversity
... Anything else that you think is interesting and inspirational and will help other readers going through tough times and make them realize they are not alone

If your story is chosen, you will be a published author and your bio will be printed in the book if you so choose. You will also receive a check for $200 and 10 free copies of your book, worth more than $100. We will copyright your story in your name and you will retain the rights to resell it.

SUBMISSIONS GO TO http://chickensoupforthesoul.com/form.asp?cid=submit_story.

DEADLINE IS MARCH 31, 2009. Book is tentatively scheduled for publication in summer 2009.

Chicken Soup for the Soul: All in the Family
101 True Stories Exploring the Fine Line between Comedy and Tragedy in Our Dysfunctional Families

How are your holidays going? Almost everyone thinks their own family is dysfunctional, or at least has a dysfunctional member or two.

We are looking for true stories and poems about your family. Stories can be serious or hilarious, or both, and should help readers understand that their families are not so different from those of other people. Many of us have the same in-laws, siblings, parents, etc.

Submit under your real name, but rest assured we expect most of you to use pen names for publication and change the names of family members to protect the innocent (or guilty!). We prefer stories and poems written in the first person of no more than 1,200 words.

Here are some suggested topics, but we know you can think of many more, since there is no way we can think of all the ways that families can be dysfunctional:

Wedding woes
Compulsions
Holiday meltdowns
Mean or controlling family members
Crazy but lovable
Interventions and family meetings
Abandoning a family member, sometimes to preserve the rest
Funny foibles
Serious family issues such as abuse, mental illness, substance abuse
Reconciliations
Funeral flare-ups and estate issues
Acceptance
... Anything else that you think is interesting about your dysfunctional relatives

We are not looking for stories about divorce or the normal trials and tribulations of raising children and teenagers.

If your story is chosen, you will be a published author and your bio will be printed in the book if you so choose. You will also receive a check for $200 and 10 free copies of your book, worth more than $100. You will retain the copyright for your story and you will retain the right to resell it.

SUBMISSIONS GO TO http://chickensoupforthesoul.com/form.asp?cid=submit_story.

DEADLINE IS JUNE 30, 2009. Book is tentatively scheduled for publication in fall 2009, in time for the next holiday season!

Christian Devotions

ChristianDevotions.us welcomes submissions from published authors, seasoned writers and aspiring writers.

Below you will find the guidelines. We adhere strictly to these guidelines and ask that your work be submitted appropriately.

www.ChristianDevotions.us - Eddie Jones and Cindy Sproles, Editors

1) Pray about your devotion. Pray for the ministry.

2) Make it from the heart. Make it personal but relatable to life experiences

3) Use one scripture; try to keep it short.

4) Your devotion should be 300-400 words using the Hook, Book, Look, Took method.

Hook- Catch the reader's interest with a brief story or shocking statement
Book - Declare your key point or theme and your interpretation of the passage
Look - Present the big picture, then offer a practical application
Took - Lead to a decision, offer an action statement. Challenge the reader to change.

Visit the site to see the format and what we look for in a devotion

5) Avoid controversial subject matter. We want the reader to develop two things:

A) A relationship with the Father
B) A habit of daily study

Doctrinal issues can cause divisions. We don’t have the resources to cover theological issues on our site. Our ministry is to introduce the readers to Christ, teach them through personal experiences, and show them how to groom a life with Christ. It’s okay for readers to see that life as a Christian can be both full of pain and joy. Humor is okay, provided it’s tasteful.

6) Don't preach.

7) We reserve the right to edit any devotions that we receive but we try to work with the writer to make the work their words and voice. Most rewrites result from too many words and too little clarity.

8) You will be notified in advance of publication. When your devotion posts, please send an email to your friends and family, encouraging them read your work. This is how we spread the word of the ministry. Your devotion will post to www.ChristianDevotions.us, to www.mountainbreezedevotions.blogspot.com and will be delivered via email to subscribers of Christian Devotions.

*Please submit your devotion in a Word doc (we do have Word 2007 and .docx files are not a problem.) Submit them as follows:

A) Single spaced
B) Add a brief bio on the bottom of your devotion and attach a .jpeg photo if available.
C) Save each item as a file and label them as such.
For example: photo: Cindy Sproles.jpg or Devotion: Cindy Sproles.doc, etc
D) Upon acceptance – please send us your home address and phone numbers. There are times we must speak to you personally.

What about the rights to your devotion? No worries. You remain in control of all rights to your work. Our site is copyrighted.

If you are published and have a book, we are happy, upon publication of your devotion, to list your book as well. This is our way of encouraging and helping writers share their written works with readers. ChristianDevotions.us is not a commerce site, so all books should link to your personal site or Amazon.com.

At this time there is no monetary compensation for devotions. We do, however, offer you an opportunity to build a platform for your devotional writing. We also know that editors and agents occasionally visit the site. In all cases, your motivation should be to bless others through your writing and treat each devotion as a tithe of your talents. That said, we will do all we can to help promote you and your work.

You may contact us at or email to: [email protected] or
[email protected]

We look forward to reading your work.
