Superman (It's Not Easy) by Five for Fighting. For simple lyrics from Superman's perspective and the "home I'll never see" makes the tears flow.

Pearl Jam - "Long Road"

Great song about the journey of life.

"And I wished for so long. Cannot stay. All the precious moments. Cannot stay. It's not like wings have fallen. Cannot stay. But still something's missing. I cannot say. I have wished for so long, How I wish for you today."

Or "Man of the Hour" by PJ as well.

"Tidal waves don't beg forgiveness
Crashed and on their way
Father he enjoyed collisions; others walked away
A snowflake falls in may.
And the doors are open now as the bells are ringing out"

God I love this band, such a perfect combination of vocals, songwriting, and instrumentals.

Tears in Heaven - by Eric Clapton. He wrote it about the death of his son and it was sad before I had kids, even sadder now that I do have them.

Empty Garden - Elton John/Bernie Taupin - written about the death of John Lennon

My City of Ruins - Bruce Springsteen. It's about the fall and rise of Asbury Park, but it's also about hope in general as well.

Australia.
Not moving so much as wonderful, but this re-working of Australia's then-PM Julia Gillard's wonderful "Misogyny Speech" is my current hairs-standing- up-on-the-back-of-the-neck fave. It's by Rob Davidson

Scoff if you will, but in terms of songs that move in an upbeat way, I really think Pharrell Williams nailed it with "Happy". It's tricky to make happy sound cool. Sly Stone had that sort of joy in his music.

Not cheesy at all. I agree. Bridge over Troubled Water is a benchmark for moving songs.

Very first song that popped into my head was Fast Car by Tracy Chapman. I get teary and melancholy whenever I hear it.
