This effort is still getting off the ground, but it already lists the names, ranks and units of millions of soldiers, mostly British, it seems. They are soliciting help in filling out individual bios.
Edit: I've tried it out on some famous RFC pilots with mixed success, and no identifications apart from rank and unit -- with many famous pilots missing from the database completely. Looks like they still have a lot of work to do.
