Hello!

New to the AW forums, very glad to be here.

I've been writing since I was a kid, since before I spoke English (grew up with French and Slavic/Russian hybrid, picked up English, then some German and Latin as I bumped around). Published short stories and poetry all through school and worked on many novels--even finished a few. Starting to look at doing this for a living before it's too late.

I have a huge fascination with the didactic and rhetorical properties of fiction--how open our minds are to learning new things and exploring new ideas through anecdotes, and how enjoyable it can be for both the audience and the writer when fiction carries a message, an intent of some kind, along with the great vehicle-chassis that is a well-told story.

Look forward to making a few friends,
EJ

Less of a knack and more of an accident--like most good things in life, I'd venture.... :snoopy:

Now i have "I Speak Six Languages" from Spelling Bee in my head. :)

I am SO JEALOUS of people with aptitude for other languages. I took basically a decade of French starting in middle school up through highschool and i can barely remember how to do past tense. Meanwhile, here's you learning by accident. BAH! :)

The younger you learn, the easier it is, that's for sure. English is technically my third language, though it's been my primary language on and off for the last twenty years or so.

Learning as a kid helps. Second best is practice via immersion; traveling, or even just reading a book or watching a film in that language. The less you're exposed to it, the harder it is to hold onto (especially as we get older!).

Last time I had major surgery I woke up and the post-op drugs were strong enough that I'd "forgotten" English for a short period. What a trip.... Thank God for hospital interpreters.

A handful of posts, and I can already tell you have the mind of a writer. And that's one of the best compliments I think I can give!
