Thanks Greeny.

(In case you don't know, we kiss a lot in this country and it's one the things I like best about being portuguese.)

That's not a bad thing, PDA is becoming an issue for some. Makes people "uncomfortable", there are many reasons but I think there's a "you shouldn't be happier then me" complex going on. How dare you love one another (friendship or other) when I don't!

Oi pessoal! Obrigada pelas dicas!
Será que ficaria muito estranho dizer "he smells like wood and grass and soap?"

Eu acho que "he smells like wood and grass and soap" funciona bem.

Mato is not quite the same as bush, though. I think it's another one of those words for which there are no translations available and they use the closest thing, like Madrugada.

Getting closer

Thanks again, guys! I think I'm getting closer to something here. I liked the 'wild forest' smell, lol. I guess the fact that the guy in the picture was pretty hot helped that. ;)
Anyway, I can't think of a translation for 'mato', either. And I guess it is closer to 'grass' than it is to 'bush'. 'Bush' would be 'arbusto'. And 'mato' would be something like wild grass, grass that has grown on its own, with no one to cut it or to take care of it, usually in farms or open land or something like that. I'm really familiar with 'mato' because I live in a region with a biome that resembles the savanna, called cerrado.
Here's some 'mato' for you, lol:

Actually, I still think the translation on wikipedia confuses 'mato' with 'arbusto'. But then I found a link to 'grassland' on that link you sent, and I guess that's the closest I can get. :)
Then again, would a shrubland or a grassland smell good? Lol.
I couldn't open the video (the computer at work blocks it). I think I'm going to go with something like 'he smells like wild grass and soap". Sounds good? Would you want to smell that guy? Lol.
Thanks again!

I would just add a little more description to the soap part. After all, what does soap smell like, if you use just the word soap?

A world all my own.
Just soap is not very interesting. I think these days most of that is scented but I can still remember the stuff that is just soap, not intersting at all even thouh it smells clean.
Freshly mowed grass smells pretty nice and the great outdoors after a thunderstorm too so go with shrubland or grassland, no problem.
I guess shrubland will make the reader wonder more about it. :)

Well, I was actually going for a clean, 'outdoorsy' smell for the character. The thing is, it's a wrecked, wild land with very little comforts (such as perfume) and I don't know if the weather would fit a shrubland. The way I'm thinking, probably not, have to see about that.
I'll ponder this more later, though, when I translate it. :)

Que conversa muito interessante! Adorei ler a situacao sobre o mato. :) Ajudou-me tambem!
Especialmente no Alentejo. Adorei.

No momento, eu estou participando do Nanowrimo pra terminar minha primeira novel. Alguém daqui tabém está participando?
