The Guest is the most surprising film I've seen in a while. Got it on Redbox without much hope. It's from the team who made You're Next, a film that's criminally misunderstood. You're Next was a parody of campy slasher horror films, in which the humor was how precise it was in depicting the sort of movie it was making fun of. When I first saw it, I described it as Tarantino directs Scream.
The Guest takes the idea to the action thriller. It's certainly not awards material, but a highly entertaining B-movie. Sure, the dialogue is occasionally stiff, and the action is certainly left over from the 80's, but you'll chuckle throughout, and the plot will leave you guessing. Director Adam Wingard recycled a lot of the music from You're Next, but it works just as well here as it did there. And props to Downton Abbey's Dan Stevens for delivering a pretty solid (and certainly badass) performance in a role he's not accustomed to.
Anybody else see this? What did you think?
