I only knew Woof through reading his posts, but those few words you wrote about his life and work moved me, Nymtoc.

Thinking of his family and loved ones.

Gutted to hear this, I had no idea. Woof was one of the Good Guys.

Thanks for posting, Nym.

I'm very sorry, both for his long illness and for his passing. I hope he knew how much he meant to the community here. Rest in peace, Woof.

Oh, I'm so sorry to hear this. :( Woof was one of those AWers that I often brushed up against in the wordplay threads. Such a funny and clever guy.

Thanks for letting us know Nymtoc!

All of this sad news is overwhelming, but I will always remember his wit in the threads he started here! He will be missed!! :(

Your many comments are very moving.

I didn't realize, till I began corresponding with Joseph, that the "voice" he used here in the Whimsy forum was mainly an act (a highly entertaining one). His real voice was that of an intelligent, well-informed and gentle man. I think that, to an extent, he used humor as a camouflage for his more sensitive nature. He wrote haiku and other poetry, but--I gathered--he never posted it here because he feared it wasn't good enough.

Here is a haiku he sent me just over a year ago:

invoking the light
hands are placed over the eyes
in the shadows, pain

RIP, old friend.

I'm sad, but also a bit happy. Now I know there'll be popcorn and games waiting for me up there.

DANG!

Just ran across this...

Woof and I exchanged several PMs - I knew he was ill, but I kept trying to make him laugh and log back on and entertain us with his exceptional puns.

Gonna miss you, Woofie.

Isn't this an odd thing? Most of us only knew Woof here in this forum, and never met him in person; most of use have no idea what he looked like, how he sounded, what his background was, where he lived or how old he was or much of anything about him really. Nevertheless, this genuinely hurts deeply. It's very, very sad and we have all lost a good friend.
I hope he is bantering with angels right now.

Here, there, everywhere.
That's the beauty of a close-knitted community such as ours (even more incredible given the size of AW) - even though the internet feels so impersonal, lives are truly touched and bonds really do form. :)

i can't find the words to describe my sadness. loss for someone who lived half the continent away? someone i would not recognize in the flesh? but whose goofy avatar always made my heart grin. thanks for being the bearer, nymtoc. i was missing him and could not find him. --s6
