I actually spend more time watching reviews than anything. Especially old film reviews. There's a bunch of Russian SF films which I keep meaning to buy, so learning which ones to avoid (by actually seeing the way people react to them rather than reading text reviews) is useful. And I can bluff my way through a convo about pretentious French and Italian arthouse films thanks to YouTube. Not that I would have the patience to sit through half of those on DVD...

Mutant cat :) I'm glad the new place is treating you well, B.

Thank you my friend! And rather than mutant, I call him Handsome Cat. I think he was up to no good, as the ducks flew off, squawking.

If nothing else, so far packing has taught me that I have *way* too many teacups.

Gatonovela, for you.

ok, thank you for that... and I'm with Fen, you can't have too many teacups.

I woke up at 1:30 and was still awake at 4:30 if that makes you feel better.

Other than that I have nothing to add apart from that I'm making bread and socks.

Read that however you wish.

I may well have done just that (or in the cinema or on TV if not on DVD) in my time - which ones do you have in mind?

Endless patience and a streak of masochism are requirements for a reviewer - I've spent a lot of my time doing that, though never did it full time.

It's mostly the Euro-films which appeared post-Éric Rohmer, without having the story in place to make them bearable. I love his balance of art and story (film being essentially a visual medium, people seemed, for a little while, to concentrate on "teh pretty" rather than making sure that the films they were making were solid enough to carry the visual element), and the box sets manage to add even more to the experience. Oh and there's a particular British film - you'll know the one - which is basically food porn, which I have never been able to sit through entirely. It's obnoxious to a degree that even Helen Mirren (whose work I love) can't elevate it beyond the mediocre and visually offensive.

Well, it is nice to know I'm not alone. :)

Maybe I'll be able to get more than 3 hours of sleep later today. But it'll have to wait because Mr. Kricket has to tune his stupid car and we might be taking Little Kricket into the doctor. He's got a swollen eyelid and I can't figure out why. All the research I've done doesn't sound good.

:gaah Sleep deprivation is not good for me. I function but I'm a super moody bitch about it. *grrrr*

I am up at 6am on a Saturday. And I didn't mean to. I don't know what's happened. It's like... I'm reformed. I went to bed at 11pm last night.... Wow.

Does that include any videos where someone falls or cats are flushing toilets? ;) That seems to be some of the most popular stuff on YouTube. Haha.

dude... don't mock the 'tube... :)

The Cook, The Thief, His Wife And Her Lover. I know there's a rabid fanbase for the film, but I can't stand Peter Greenaway in his full-on "I'm so clever, lookit me, mom" mode. If it contained characters I gave a damn about, or managed to inject some comedy into proceedings, it wouldn't be so painful.

Oh, and there's a SF film with a musical segment where kids dance in space (yes, you read that right) I am now desperate to see in full thanks to YouTube. Not sure of the name, but the tune is infectious.

I went to bed at 11 because I was so tired. I slept for an hour, then woke up. Didn't fall asleep again until 3.

I'm up now, and off to get dressed and go see the Avengers with my brother.

Hey, so if I'm writing a story in which a cyber-punky future collides with a comprehensive system of magic, am I writing science fiction or urban fantasy?

Does the magic have an underlying technological or chemical (or whatever) basis for usage, or is it big, flashy dragons-in-the-sky and fireballs-from-fingertips magic?

Fireballs, but no dragons. Big and flashy, with initially no scientific cause (and main culprit in WWIII, which was more a gigantic civil war across all nations as the disenfranchised got... empowered) though in the recovery period there is now extensive research being done into how it works. There's measurable evidence of some kind of possible quantum connection, even though it's not fully understood yet.

Although the basic result is "Cyborgs with super strength and enhanced reflexes go up against combat mages that hurl lightning and fireballs."

Or the even shorter version, Geek Pr0n.

It's SF. :)

As long as you can give (even a dubious) explanation for the magic, then you can simply call it SF and ignore the naysayers. Plus, y'know... cyborgs. :D

Yawning at the mention of cyborgs is a banishable offense. Those who indulge in such practices will, in future, be made to sweep out the Tauntaun pen...

does my early morning start get negated by the 2 hour nap I took in the afternoon?

It all balances out. Just make sure you write something awesome with the "extra" time. :)
