This is quite embarrassing really, but last night I read the delightful book 'The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane' by Kate Dicamillo and I actually shed a tear at the end.

It got me thinking that surely this is the definition of a successful fiction writer - to inflict such an emotional impact on the reader. (well certainly to me it's one of the most important aims).

It just reinforces the power and beauty of books.

(Or maybe I was just a bit hormonal that day!)

Have any books you read recently made you cry?

That friggin' book. THAT BOOK.

Looking For Alaska made me tear up too, and After Hamelin is one of the first ever books that made me cry.

The Happy Prince by Oscar Wilde.

For my brother it was Charlotte's Web - he bawled after reading that.

I've started The Night Circus but I own a copy so I'm finishing two other books from the library first...

I bawled like a baby over a book called My Sweet Lemon Tree (or something like it) when I was a teenager. I think it must be long out of print; I've never been able to find a copy of it.

The Dead and the Gone by Susan Beth Pfeffer. None of the other Last Survivors books have affected me the way this one did.

I don't cry readily and there's only one book that has ever made me choke up every time, even after multiple rereadings.

Where the Red Fern Grows

I also have a couple of books where I know I'm going to cry because I had an ugly cry when I watched the movie the book was based on. Nicholas Sparks, anyone?
