Thanksgiving for Brits

I've never been sure why we have two May bank holidays -- the first is a given (Beltane and all that, maypoles and spring and joie de vive) but the second always makes me scratch my head a bit. Not that I complain when I get a day off

Didn't the second one arise from the tradition of domestic staff going to Fairs to find new employement? Used to happen twice a year at various times. Where I live we still have the Mop Fair but now it's just a fairground and stalls selling tat.

I used to love going to The Mop. Just rampant drunken partying nowadays, but so much fun. And then there usually a smaller one a couple of months later? The Runaway Mop, for all the servants who were unhappy in their positions.

Marmite (ugh) aside, I just feel sorry for anyone who hasn't had a chance to eat pumpkin pie.

It wasn't a very good joke.

Mezcal is the Mexican booze with the agave caterpillar in it. I was thinking of St Bernards and brandy barrels. What could a cat fill a bell with and still get it to ring? (I ignored that the bells usually have openings in them, so the booze would drain out. Details, details...)

It would have been a great joke if I understood it! But hey, I learned something today.
