Where have the red pistachios gone?

I'm on a pistachio kick. They're all natural colored but they used to be dyed red. Remember? Wondering when they quit dying them. And why they used to dye them in the first place. You'd think they were naturally disgusting looking or something but nope, just kinda the same color as peanuts in the shell. Just curious.

They used to dye them because they would get stained when picked by hand and the red covered the discoloration (and they thought the red made them look prettier anyway). Now they are mostly picked by machine in the US.

But oh my! The red ones made a mess of things! Your face, your hands, and invariably your pants...from trying to rub it off your hands and being a boob and not thinking about the transference. I quite often walked around pink. (-:
